T-bird 800 will not O/C! What is the problem?

I have a KT7 and t-bird 800 and have penciled in all the L1 bridges. On my first try, any time I set the multiplier manually, the system booted as a 700. Now, after redoing the pencil, I set multiplier manually, and the system boots at nothing but the default speed. Do I need to reset anything after the bios change, or just save to CMOS and boot from there? I am getting a bit frustrated, 'cause I just want to see what I can get out of this thing. I bought all the right stuff, Alpha HSF, good RAM, etc.

I am happy with the speed at default, but looking for more. Any help would be appreciated.

A couple of problems maybe.
I have some pictures of my cpu...
Look at the one with the lines drawn in. If any of yours don't look like this or if they are TOUCHING redo it again.
If the cpu isn't getting enough voltage it will reboot back to the normal mode, which may be happening.
Pictures of My modified TBird ... :)
Click on the picture of each one twice for a much larger picture.

One other thing comes to mind. There are pencils out there that have a "modified" graphite writing material. It isn't as good, it is a softer type of graphite and a mix of other material..
Mechanical pencils have a harder writing material and it's smaller. You may want to try a different writing device.

BTW I have 2 TBirds, a 900MHz at 1020MHz an a 1.1 GHz at 1.25GHz ( the one in the pictures)

did you check to see if your bios has the cpu feature unchecked? in some cases when the wrong cpu speed is used the system reverts back to it's original. Also, when the cpu speed doesn't work...turning off the p/s will reset the system to default.

Thanks all.

I think I did a good job of penciling, as no two adjacent bridges are connected and the points appear to be connected. The pencil I used was a cheap mechanical one, and the lead seemed very soft. Maybe I will erase the marks and try again... It is just a pain to remove my Alpha cooler since I can't get at it without sliding my mobo tray out the back of my case.

I will try upping the voltage from default a bit and see what happens. How much is too much?

I have been thinking about the defogger kit, but wanted to try the easy way first. Yeah, I'm lazy!

How hard is it to get the defogger paint off the cpu if you screw up and cover more than one bridge? It looks like pretty thick stuff, and my hands and eyes are not as good as they should be...

careful not to connect the different bridges in the L1 to one another. if they are, you may be short-circuiting your cpu.

another thing to consider is, not all cpu's will overclock. I'm not saying thats the reason, but it may be one to consider.

I don't think I have cross-connected any bridges, as the CPU runs fine at default settings. On my original pencil job, whenever I modified the multiplier setting in BIOS the thing would default to 700mhz on boot. After the second job, it defaults to 800mhz. I think I just need to clean it up and try again with a better pencil. I'll keep you posted...
