System Standby not allowed in xp

Ever since upgrading from win98se to winXP I haven't been able make my computer go into standby mode. In fact, the monitor won't even go into power saving with the 3d screen savers, I don't know if this is normal, and if the hard driver power saving is set for 1 hour it will spin down after about 2 hours and then spin back up within roughly 10minutes. I have an old abit kt7a-raid motherboard, a 1.2ghz amd athlon, radeon 8500le 128meg, santa cruz soundcard, a netgear pci lan card and an old generic isa modem. I also have powersaving disabled in teh bios, but so does another of my computers and it works fine with standby. I have all of the newest drivers for everything installed, so is it my modem that is preventing this feature from being enabled? If anybody could offer support i would be thankful.

edit- i also have a 60gig maxtor hd, a toshiba 16x cd-r, and an hp 8x8x32 cd-rw

Thank you for that fix, now i can run the 3d screen savers and my monitor will shut down. However, i still can't manage to get my hd to power down ever and standby mode is still unavailable, does anybody know the solutions to these other lingering problems?

Hey xcelr8 do these features work without a 3d screen saver?

I have my drives set for 1 hr but they never seem to shut down. I keep my system stand by at never. I run folding@home thats why I don't want system standby and figured thats why the drive never shutdown.

SemperFi,
No, even without any screen saver enabled the hard drive will either never shut down or will only shut down for a short time and then wake right back up. Also, system stand by isn't even an option, it's greyed out and i can't choose it. I think that the problem may be the old ISA modem that i have, but taking it out made no difference and i don't really want to reformat my computer since i have done that a few times this summer already. I don't even know if this board supports standby under winXP, but i know that it did under win98se, which is why i can't understand why it can't go into stand by, and why even though the hard drive can supposedly be powered down the option doesn't work.

Hey that fix seemed to work for me. I got up this morning and the monitor was off. Usually the few times that the monitor would shut off the system won't recover and I have to reset.

xcelr8, the only thing I can think of right now is the settings in the bios. Maybe there is something in there you can change to get it to show up.

xcelr8.

Is the machine setup as a STANDARD PC rather than ACPI?

You can check in the Device Manager under Computer.

If is set up as a Standard PC, that is the problem.

Yes, the computer is being seen as a "standard pc". What setting in the bios or what device is causing this to happen? It's a newer board, kt7a-raid, so shouldn't it support the new power saving methods? I have all of my devices listed in the original post. Thank you

It has to be set as "ACPI" not "ACPI/APM" in the BIOS.

If it is set the correct way, WinXP just didn't know how to handle it when
you did the original install.

Unfortunately, the only & correct way to enable it is to do a re-install of the OS.

You can do it right over the current install.
During the first phase of Setup, at the "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration"
screen, press the F5 key

Then select ACPI

Alright, so I enabled acpi in the bios and disabled "pm by apm" but still when I go to reinstall winxp over itself and i press f5 two options appear, "standard computer with c-486" or something like that, and "other". If i pick other then it tells me that i have to insert a disc with the drivers for the power management. Are my bios settings incorrect? do i have to format and reinstall after all? I can't seem to make it work, but thank you for your help LiLithTecH, however a little more would be appreciated ;):(

If Windows doesn't detect it, then it is not fully compliant (supported).

You may want to update the Bios to see if that helps.
A quick check shows there is a recent update.
You can find it here.

LiLithTecH,
Thank you for all of the help. I updated my bios, then formatted and reinstalled windows ( I was planning to do this again anyway b/c i just got a new vid card). I turned off "pm by apm" in the bios and when winXP was finished installing everything was fine and my computer is now ACPI compliant with stanby working. So not only will my monitor shut off after running a 3d screen saver but i can put the whole system in to standby thanks to your help. It was much appreciated.
