Bioshock was a phenomenal game. One of my all-time favorites for sure. I'm convinced that people hate this game because of the overwhelming amount of praise it received from review sites. It certainly is not perfect, and I hate that it's a direct port of a console game. But what's there, the actual content, is so good it almost hurts.

I'm kind of glad everyone seems to hate Bioshock, it gives me street cred as someone that doesn't just go along with the crowd! Now would you kindly break that puppy's neck...

I don't hate the game, but it was far from my favorite game that I played last year. I got it because it seemed to have universal praise heaped on it, but I enjoyed Oblivion, Stalker, The Witcher, Fallout 3, Crysis, Titans Quest, Max Payne 1 & 2, and C&C 3 better than Bioshock (Of the games I played last year and can remember off the top of my head). I liked it enough to play it to completion, but not enough that I wanted to play through it again to see what the other choices would do for me.

It was an ok game, not a great game. I have never played System Shock, so maybe that is why I didn't think it was that great. But it wasn't a bad game either, just not deserving of the "best game of the decade" type praise it seemed to get. After playing it, I wondered what other crap games people were comparing it to to end up with that opinion. I expected it to be great, but it just never delivered.

Actually, having played System Shock 2 usually causes most people to dislike Bioshock more.

Actually, the gameplay is completely different in practice. There are similarities in the story, but the general feel of the combat and the difficulty level make the end result have very little in common with SS2. This wasn't entirely a bad thing though. The gameplay is worse in some ways but better in others.

I like both games, but SS2 was undoubtedly the superior one. It had its flaws but also had a lot more depth and originality. Bioshock was an all-round solid and polished FPS, without doing anything special or revolutionary.

If they released SS3 it will be for the console with a crappy pc port and people who loved SS2 will hate most everything about the game.

/It will also be very short
//and have great graphics/sound

I agree, other than having turrets, i just dont see the similarities others seem to be talking about.

Theyre both good games in their own right, but SS2 had an atmosphere that proved just how important sound effects are in a game more than any other game ive ever played.
Its a shame sound effects take such a back seat to graphics so much nowadays.
I'd love to have both in a SS2 remake.

Here.

(God, I never thought I'd link a Yahtzee review)

The similarities go past simple gameplay, and can be found rooted deeply in the story as well. Hell, just look at the simple story arc of both games.

I am very confused as to what this has to do with a 2009 thread about System Shock 3.

Didn't play System Shock 2? The troubles on the Von Braun started when they landed on Tau Ceti 5.

I am very confused as to what this has to do with a 2009 thread about System Shock 3.

A planet in the habitable zone of its star was discovered. The 5th planet around Tau Ceti, 12 light years away - called Tau Ceti e.

System Shock 2 takes place aboard the first FTL starship (UNN Von Braun) orbiting Tau Ceti V (e is also the 5th letter), a planet from which a signal was received during the ship's maiden voyage.

First thing that came to my mind when reading the article was SS2. There's only one other thread I could find in PC Gaming about System Shock, a gameplay help thread. This one seemed more fitting...

I really enjoyed System Shock 2. It was very immersive and the story was amazing. I mean what other game has enemies like The Many. I still remember the voices: "In the eyes of the many...", "the glory of the many". What happened to SS3? It's been almost 10 years since the last game and I heard EA bought the rights to the title. I'm really hoping they'll make number 3. I would even enjoy remakes with better graphics. Black Mesa Source looks good, but what if they remade SS1 or SS2 with the Source engine. Even better, they could use CryEngine 2. Remember, the SHODAN didn't die in number 2, so that leaves room for another game.

Like you, I really loved both system shock 1 and 2; probably 2 of my favorite games of all time. However, I don't think system shock 3 will happen because looking glass is dead, and their IP was purchased by Ion Storm and is probably in a flux right now.

Both of those games were unbelievable for their time. System shock 2 is probably hands down the most immersive gaming experience i've ever had.

Same for me. System Shock 2 was such an amazing experience. It scared me shitless but I couldn't stop playing! Story was superb, I still listen to the music today (there's a remix floating around), the voice acting was top notch - also gameplay was a perfect blend of FPS and RPG.

It was one of the reasons I hated first Bioshock's story so much - it was a blatant copy of SS2, down to very small details (disregarding the setting ofc).

But I must agree - I dread to think what a third game would be today, especially from EA... While I did enjoy Dead Space 1&2, I feel only the original creators of SS could do a 3rd SS game justice. Which saddens me, as it's not going to happen...

Then again looking at Deus Ex: HR... that one turned out OK, except the ending... >_>

I loved System Shock 2 so much. Unfortunately, I was too preoccupied with Doom and Doom 2 to play System Shock 1 when it came out. I did go back and play a little of it.

But yea, System Shock 2 was amazing.

Thief: The Dark Project also.

I loved Bioshock 1 and 2 as well. I don't get the hate for them. Are they as deep as System Shock 2? No, but they're very very good. I think they retained more of the spirit of System Shock 2 than I would've expected with consoles in the picture. I hate to sound like I'm content with the scraps from the XBox's table, but I honestly thought Bioshock was quite good.

In this thread people in 2009 were predicting Deus Ex 3 would suck, but I thought Human Revolution was quite good.

As an old school gamer and a fan of Deus Ex, System Shock, Thief, Fallout... I'm actually pretty pleased with the current state of those series or their spiritual successors. Dishonored, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Bioshock 1 and 2, Fallout 3... I thought all were quite good.

If Thief 4 does happen, I hope it's good too.

I will be hoping to one day see System Shock 3. If it sucks, so be it... but I'd like to see them at least try.

I got warm fuzzies seeing all the praise for SS2. The original Deus Ex and System Shock 2 are still the two best single player PC game experience there is.

Half Life too, but not quite the same (inventory, growth, etc)
