Bleeding edge computers are pointless, no matter what your purpose is. If your purpose is to build a top of the line rig, the difference between a 3800+ and an FX-53 *might* be noticeable in benchmarks but not outside them. If your purpose is to show off to your friends (girls or guys), most could care less about a component tucked inside your case that falls within 5% of the performance of a chip costing hundreds less.
If you want to showboat, just buy a bigger display. Who's gonna get more stares, an FX-53/2GB/X800XTPE with a dual-20" LCDs or a 3500+/1GB/6800GT with a 60" LCD Projection (or Plasma)?
In conclusion, if you want to spend more money than you need to, invest in a bigger display, flashier case, etc.....parts that lose their value and usefulness a lot slower than a CPU or Video Card.
