Syn oils cost a lot more, like 4x more, no? When you switch over to syn, do you have to do it gradually ? I have an old VW w/150k miles, does it make sense to switch to synthetic ? Are the filters the same ?

Wouldn't the same apply for cold places too?
Sort of. Only to the extent that synthetic has better flow qualities at low temps. Heat is worse on oil because heat causes it to break down, cold doesn't really affect the composition of oil like heat does. That said, synthetic flows better when it's cold, so it allows easier starting in cold climates. The better flow also means that it gets through the lubrication passages more quickly on startup. Still, more benefit is realised in high heat since an engine block heater can take care of almost all of the problems with conventional oil at low temps.

the ppl that change oil every 3k miles, have they built the engines themselves or do they just drive low general build quality cars, cause that interval is ridiculous

oil changes are done every 10k-20k miles for gasoline engines and up to 35k miles for diesel engines

damn ur oilindustry really knows how infuse money making myths into the public :) j/k
but really where does this myth come from not even our cars from like 15 years ago needed to change on such short intervals

when i switch a car from regular --> full synthetic (group 4, PAO, SL rated) i get it HOT and then add engine flush, run that for like 15 minutes, drive it up on ramps then drain immediately, same with filter. wait until there's next to nothing coming out (takes an hour or so) then put on a good filter (verdic/wix, purolator) and add the oil.
