Symphony X

I like Evolution(The Grand Design) best I think...the riffs in that one are fvcking mean.
Other favs are Sea of Lies(that one kicks mucho ass live), Absenese of Light, Pharao, Out of the Ashes and A Fool's Paradise.
Oh well, most of their stuff kicks ass 🙂

you shoudl check out their "Live on the Edge of Forever" CD its very good

A less on Before dying, The Devine Wings of Trahedy and Through the looking glass parts 1-3 are my faves

what grabs me is that they sound like Kansas with a bit of Emerson Lake and Palmer and a splash of YES
And guess what they listened too and where 2 of their guys got musicality?? HUH?

Never heard of any of those people.

You've never heard of Kansas, ELP, or Yes?!?!?!?! Dude, you need to go find some of their stuff. Here you are listening to the finest of modent progressive rock/metal, and you don't even know their roots? Seriously, how can you not know Yes? "Owner of a Lonely Heart?" "Roundabout?" "I've Seen All Good People?" Good god man!!!! 😛

Anyway, yeah, SymX is good stuff. I wouldn't exactly say that Pantera is a band I'd compare them to, Dream Theater yes, Rhapsody yes, but not Pantera. Oh well, they rock hard and that's all that matters 🙂

Symphony X is DA BOMB. If anyone wants to hear and learn some ridiculous guitar solos, Michael Romeo is DA MAN to check out. He's kind of a mix between the progressive sound and techniques of Petrucci but with heavy neoclassical influences of Malmsteen.

Yeah, definitely alot of Malmsteen there, he's even worked on a body shape that resembles Yngwie 😉

Well.... Yeah? LOL..

I mean, I listen to Metallica, but I don't really listen to any of the NWOBHM bands..... 😛

I just discovered SymX, I've only heard 2 songs.. When I said Pantera, I just meant the one song that I linked...

The riff that starts at ~0:50 reminds me of them for some reason.. lol

The intro riff has inspired me to pick up my guitar again. 😀 I gotta learn that sh!t.

Gah! Those time changes are wicked......

it was almost cool until that goat started bleating along with the music. 😉

but it's always cool to hear a band you haven't heard before, so thanks.

Hahahahah. I don't think he's got the double chin though...

Jeez....Symphony X wipes the dirty toilet floor with Metallica in just about everything except maybe in the vocals department where I think James has some of the baddest vocals in metal. Kirk Omelette can't hold a finger to Romeo. Hell even I could put Kirk to shame.

It's apples to oranges. Different times, different styles of metal.

I hate it when people say sh!t like this. That just isn't the way it is. I mean, come on. Who are you again? Let's hear some of your stuff.

It isn't about what you can play. I can play Metallica. It is about what you can create. It isn't fair to compare bands like they're an automobile or something.

I have only heard 2 Symphony X songs, but the solos haven't stood out to me at all. Kirk is the best soloist for Metallica, Period. James and Kirk complement eachother perfectly. Metallica wouldn't be Metallica without Kirk and his solos.

Remember, music isn't about what you like. It is about what they like. If you don't like what they like, you're encouraged to write your own music. 😉

If you spent any serious amount of time learning serious lead guitar, you'd probably be able to understand what I meant by that. Michael Romeo outside of Symphony X is an extremely tasteful and lyrical guitarist with a great sense of writing and extraodinary technical ability. Great sense of touch and feel as well. Kirk has none of that, bends awfully out of tune, has an amateur sense of touch, hides behind walls of effects, lack melodic sense and is just lucky to be part of a big name. It is not a subjective measurement, it is absolute if you look at it from a professional (learned) musician's point of view.

NO.

It is a different style. Everything you mentioned is someones opinion. It is not fact, there is no fact in the world of art.

It is not your artistic vision, you have no place saying those things. It is your opinion.

Bends out of tune? Give me a break. I don't care if you don't like Hammett or Metallica, but don't say stupid sh!t like that. Metallica didn't get to where they are by being poor musicians, the idea is preposterous.

What exactly is an "amateur sense of touch"? Hides behind walls of effects? In what songs? Lacks melodic sense? In your opinion.

Kirk Hammet is 1/4 of Metallica. He isn't "lucky to be apart of a big name", he IS the big name.

Just what we need in the world, more close minded musicians. I'll only ask one more time.. Who are you again?

Buy the book The Art of Kirk Hammett.
