If you spent any serious amount of time learning serious lead guitar, you'd probably be able to understand what I meant by that. Michael Romeo outside of Symphony X is an extremely tasteful and lyrical guitarist with a great sense of writing and extraodinary technical ability. Great sense of touch and feel as well. Kirk has none of that, bends awfully out of tune, has an amateur sense of touch, hides behind walls of effects, lack melodic sense and is just lucky to be part of a big name. It is not a subjective measurement, it is absolute if you look at it from a professional (learned) musician's point of view.
NO.
It is a different style. Everything you mentioned is someones opinion. It is not fact, there is no fact in the world of art.
It is not your artistic vision, you have no place saying those things. It is your opinion.
Bends out of tune? Give me a break. I don't care if you don't like Hammett or Metallica, but don't say stupid sh!t like that. Metallica didn't get to where they are by being poor musicians, the idea is preposterous.
What exactly is an "amateur sense of touch"? Hides behind walls of effects? In what songs? Lacks melodic sense? In your opinion.
Kirk Hammet is 1/4 of Metallica. He isn't "lucky to be apart of a big name", he IS the big name.
Just what we need in the world, more close minded musicians. I'll only ask one more time.. Who are you again?
Buy the book The Art of Kirk Hammett.
Sorry bud but this is where I and anyone worth a penny that can play guitar at a certain proficiency level will disagree, but you and too many others that can't will never understand (and helplessly show in their arguments).
Metallica is the Britney Spears of Metal...however that doesn't mean I don't like them as a whole. The have some of my most timeless favorites such as Seek and Destroy, Leper Messiah, Thing That Should Not Be, Fade to Black, King of Nothing..and so on. What I'm saying is Kirk lacks in the guitar department although I've learned a few useful licks from him...pretty generic run of the mill ones that is.
For example, let's have an audience of professional jazz musicians who are obviously the most educated musicians (and if you deny this fact, step away immediately)...and put Romeo and Hammett on stage for an all around musicianship duel. Guess who'd run away? Kirk of course. You can't argue that if you know a thing or two about music from a professional's standpoint but since you are not, you won't get it. Get it? End of story.
No, that isn't the end of the story, and no, I don't get it.
If Hammett isn't a professional, then who the fsck is? You? Didn't think so.
Why are you comparing a Jazz musician to a guitarist in Metallica? That's your first mistake. It's apples to oranges. Romeo(?) and Hammett have no business being on stage for a "musicianship duel". What the fsck is the point in that? The Jazz dude is going to be able to play Jazz, the metal dude is going to be able to play Metal. What is your point? Any jackass can play some notes on the guitar. If you're so good, then you should know that music is much more than notes.. It is feeling. The energy and feeling that any given instrument player puts into his/her art is what makes the music, and it is unique.
You're completely missing the whole point. Music is an art. It is subjective. Just because you don't think it's "good" doesen't mean anything. It doesen't mean that the artist "sucks", it means that you don't care for their material. Nothing more.
Music isn't about "musicianship". Musicianship is being proficient at your art. There is a difference between a n00b guitar player and someone who is proficient at something unique that they have developed on their own. That is what I call musicianship. Any musician worth their weight in sh!t knows the ins and outs of their art. That's why your claim of bending out of tune is ludicrous. The thing is, that each individual musician is going to know the music that they're interested in best.
If you can play the guitar so well, again, who the fsck are you? Don't give me that "I'm God" bullsh!t. The fact is, that you are not better than Kirk Hammett or any other well known professional guitar player. If you were, you wouldn't be on ATOT arguing with me about which artist is "better".
Get it? End of story.
It's like trying to compare any other art form, be it authors, painters, etc. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you don't like it, that's fine. There are obviously plenty of others that do, and that is all that matters.
Geez. Like I said, just what we need.. more close-minded musicians. Go smoke a bowl and wake up or something.
