Bleh I think I may have an issue that will make me return my SGS3. Dunno if it's just mine that is defective but I doubt it. The noise floor for the headphone jack is atrocious. I've tried using 3 different headphones with 10 various music and apps and they are all the same. There is a very noticeable background hiss. The hiss can easily be heard even while muted. Just plug in headphones, mute volume, and hit play in any media or app that has sound. The hiss goes away while no app is trying to put sound but is immediately there as soon as something does. I googled around and apparently this was an issue with the SGS2 as well - Samsung apparently cheaped out and used a crummy DAC compared to previous phones.

edit: apparantly the international SGS3 has a good DAC, it's just the US LTE version which is crummy. In that case, I may return my AT&T SGS3 and get the international one after all. I don't have LTE in my area yet anyway.

Tried that on my GS3 (also from ATT), I don't get any hissing through my headphones at work (grado SR-80), I'll try it at home too with my better headphones, I'm interested to see if this is a bad problem since I listen to a lot of music on my phone.

Odd, have you all tried it with various music player apps? I've never had this issue.

I don't recall for every one of them, but 3 of my Android phones did this when I had headphones plugged in. I believe every one of them did it when I use a bluetooth headset/headphones. I have found no way to correct this, and have submitted reports to Google multiple times since the Droid 1 days. Apparently it's either not wide spread enough, or not enough people care enough to get Google to want to fix this. All my system notifications and calls play thru the speaker for a second before it routes the audio to my Bluetooth headset. It's annoying as hell but I've learned to live with it over the years.

To the OP I own both platforms, and neither is perfect. If you stick with Android I suspect you'll just learn to deal with the bugs, just like you dealt with the lack of features on iOS. Myself, I'm trying to switch back to iOS because I'll take a lack of features over bugs. And to be honest I'm just getting a bit bored with the apps Android has.

I too switched from a 4s to a GS3, i find it retarded that android you can't turn location off for apps, its all or nothing, that is i don't want facebook or twitter to send my location and it does. In ios i can just turn off the location for that app while having gps on for navigation.
Other than that its fine but i am amazed how apple lets me have this freedom and google don't.

Root it and install LBE privacy guard. It gives you control over all your apps permissions.

If there's one thing I dislike, all the better Apps that do useful things require root. To be honest rooting your phone is a process that seems harder than it needs to be. There isn't really a 1 click way to do it for the most part.

Actually, Samsung phones are probably the easiest ones to root these days. Motorola phones probably the hardest... HTC and LG somewhere in between. Many phones can be rooted with 1-click methods.

Then why should you have to root? I'm nitpicking for sure though but you can see how from the perspective of the average someone upgrading to the latest phone will ask "why can't I...?" and get an answer "oh you can but you have to root" and they are like "huh???".

Anyhow...with both iOS and Android there are annoyances.

My SGS2 took Odin and I had to find the matching version of CF-Root. I matched the firmware version but apparently my stock Android was 2.3.4 not 2.3.5. I flashed the wrong one initially (2.3.5) and my phone bootlooped.

The day I got my iPod Touch I plugged it in and JBed it in about 5 seconds flat with greenp0ison.

My Nexus S took a totally different way to root and I fumbled around trying to deal with Windows drivers for the longest time. Took about an hour total because the USB drivers wouldn't install for adb to work.

My Motorola Milestone took a lot of copying files back and forth and probably took 45 minutes.

I don't think rooting is not THAT easy at all. It differs phone to phone and iOS JBing is a joke compared to rooting.

Are you comparing this to iPhone where you are entirely locked down and can't do anything? At least you have a choice with Android. I also wouldn't say that the only useful apps require root. Chrome isn't useful? Gmail isn't useful? They don't require root.

My Note was rooted in less time.

It's not Google's fault.. it's phone manufacturers. Google couldn't care less if you have root access to Android. Google doesn't lock the bootloaders on various Android phones... the phone manufacturer does.

Or it's because those same exploits could be used for all kinds of other nasty stuff. Seriously, there were a few where the jailbreak process was as easy as visiting a web page, that were such an egregious security flaw that they needed to be fixed immediately.

Otherwise, I don't think Apple cares too much if people jailbreak. It lets them pick up a few more sales that they otherwise wouldn't and the amount that Apple makes from app sales is next to nothing compared to the hardware.

And my Samsung Galaxy Note keeps track of how many times the phone has been flashed and rooted. Which is far and away worse than Apple releasing updates that fix exploits. Regardless how you feel about JB'ing, it's made possible due to a hole in the system. Maybe Apple also releases these updates to keep all the people who make apps for the store happy? If I was a programmer I would damn sure be happy about that. Sideloading is a big problem, a good number of people I've ran into who JB did it so they could get free apps. Yeah there are exceptions, but be realistic most didn't so they could change the wallpaper.

Meanwhile Samsung won't give me a new phone if mine breaks because they can see I rooted it. But I'm sure none of the Android people would have any problem with that right? And it's not Google's fault here, so they're off the hook for letting the manafacturer of Android devices do whatever they fuck they want.
