It's worth keeping in mind Android isn't iOS and expecting them to be identical is asking for disappointment.

Its preference.
Weigh your options

Biggest factor for me choosing android over iOS was the customization and the 4G

If you don't really like messing around with it, stick with iOS. They have fewer phones to work with so less fragmentation.

OP also said he didn't like the iPhone's small screen so it sounds like he's screwed either way and will have to compromise somewhere.

Do it man. Cancel the for sale thread and return your S III. It'll be the best decision you'll make.

Should we all be surprised that the guy with the "How to make a perfect cup of tea" in his sig is advocating a return to the iPhone? Could you be trying to be hip any harder?

Yeah but the notification goes through the headphones AND the external speaker. Also it doesn't pause the media, it just mutes it (causing me to miss part of whatever I was listening to).

mine does not go through both. you might have a bug on yours.

I wouldnt want it to pause personally, if I miss 3 seconds of music to hear a beep for email or text thats fine, I dont want it to pause, if I am doing something that requires me to have in my holster or in pocket I would hate to have to stop just to hit play

Yes I assume it is in fact a bug since it is tracked on the google bug page linked previously.

Anyway, as for iphone vs android, it's a tradeoff. iphone "just works" but android has bigger nicer screens and customization. Due to the bugs I've run in to so far I'd call it an even trade off at best. I don't like having to spend hours figuring out how to fix every weird nit the device has. I'm just hoping that I can fix the nits and get used to it, in that case android will be better overall.

Let me break it down for you because you're clearly dense. I haven't owned an iPhone since the 3G. Not even the 3GS, mind you. I went to the Nexus One after that and I am currently using the Galaxy Nexus with Jelly Bean. I also have an ASUS Transformer tablet. I don't have any Apple products besides the Macbook that work provided and owns and a really old iPod I got for free.

The reason I am suggesting the OP go back to the iPhone is it's simply not worth it to convince him otherwise. When people ask me for phone or computer advice or peripheral, I used to make compelling arguments for Android, the Zune HD, Sennheisers etc. But now, I look at them and I realize most people want you to justify why they should buy what they want to buy anyway - Macbook, iPhone, Beats by Dr. Dre, etc.

The OP is like every other iPhone lover on this forum. They come on and say "Prove to me why I should switch to Android" or "Justify my switch." Why should I? It's not like I own GOOG stock.

I'm pretty sure that guy was just trolling. That is my other gripe about android...and open source in general. Whenever you ask for how to fix a problem you get flamed by "I don't have this bug, must be just your problem you stupid noob go back to iOS" responses.

1) ok I recognize this is personal preference. But there are no apps in the android store which duplicate the iphone option. Also it is annoying that muting the ringer does not mute media sounds, and inserting headphones/bluetooth do not unmute/restore media volume.

2) this is a known long-standing bug apparently, only recently fixed in Jelly Bean: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=16667

3) this is an intermittent problem when trying to edit text in text boxes such as on the anandtech forum reply boxes. Specifically, the selection pointers either do not place where I click them, or do not select the text that is in between them. Apparently also a known bug. edit - this may be a bug in chrome only, will try out firefox for a while and see if it happens there.

I'm extremely surprised that nobody in this thread other than OP has experienced number 2. Are you guys sure you don't have this issue? This is a glaring issue among even the most popular android devices in the past 3 years. The link OP posted there just happens to be a newer one, but it dates all the way to the original Motorola Droid. It's hard to tell if you have noise cancelling headphones on, but this is a real issue that happens to a lot of people.

I can confirm along with OP that it happens on my HTC EVO and Sprint variant of the Galaxy S II.. hell even my touchpad. Whenever I listen to music on my phone with headphones, I turn off notification sounds manually. Glad to hear it got resolved in Jelly Bean though.

I can also agree with OP about text boxes in the browser. It's extremely frustrating to edit/scroll through it. But that issue was easily resolved for me by using tapatalk.

But you don't even sound like you want to have your problem fixed.

You just sound like you want a reason to complain about your new phone so you can switch back to the iPhone and claim 'man, I tried Android but its just so crappy'.

I don't know :/ guess it just comes from the tone of your messages

Yeah I understand that. I am just sort of venting out of frustration at the annoying bugs and not just lack of any fixes, but the apparent acceptance of these bugs as normal by long time android users.

1) why would the volume button control the media when it isn't playing? the volume rocker controls the first thing that you'll probably use you phone for, making/receiving calls. anyway with aokp roms once you touch the volume rocker you have the ability to control 4 volume sliders for ringer/notification/media/alarm

2) noticed this too, thought it was a bit strange but i rarely use headphones with my phone

3) i use opera and haven't had any issues with copy/paste

Given that, apparently, #1 is the standard behaviour on both iOS and Android and #2 and #3 doesn't seem to be affecting anyone else I dont think you can say its general acceptance of bugs.

So you don't blow your ears out when you first start music? So you can mute the audio -before- starting a game while on the can? Do you guys never use headphones with your phones for listening to music or what? This seems like basic functionality to me. I mean I understand they are smartphones but personally I rarely make or receive voice calls...mainly texting, web & media :)

2) noticed this too, thought it was a bit strange but i rarely use headphones with my phone

Oh ok well there you go. Some of us do like to use headphones and/or bluetooth on a regular basis.

3) i use opera and haven't had any issues with copy/paste

Yeah this issue might be only related to Chrome as I mentioned earlier.

Uh, you made my point precisely. It's this attitude of claiming "it's not affecting anyone else" when it is clearly affecting plenty of other people that drives me nuts.

there's a simple option in #1 to make the iPhone behave another way. Stop repeating this over and over because it's a simple setting in the sound section to set what the volume rocker controls by default.

It's not that simple in Android. You would think that with all the Android phans praising openness and option and choice, you would think Google would bake in many options for its phones.

Instead we rely on the Cyanogen team or AOKP to bring these custom settings that complete the phone.

OP has a valid concern. He might be stubborn in his ways, but if Android was all that, it would've given you many options to deal with these things.

Huh?

#1 Is just standard on most platforms. You can set the levels differently if you go settings>sound>volumes or install a widget.

#3 How can everyone else complain about it if its just affecting you and this is the first time you've mentioned it.

#2 I see a few other people are saying this, its never happened to me. If I have head phones plugged in then everything plays through them. Sorry for not complaining about something thats never happened to me. o_O

Well this thread went nicely. OP posted bugs he experienced and everyone calls him an android hater and go back to his iPhone. Surely OP can't have bugs on an android device, right?

Bugs are one of the reasons I haven't switched to android still. I have a Galaxy S I was playing with. I flashed custom ROMs on it and still can't get some things to work right. The most annoying is, when it is fully charged (ie you are charging at night), once it gets to 100% the screen will turn on and stay on all night until you unplug it and it will beep non-stop. I tried cyanogen mod and some other ROM same thing. Can't find a way to turn it off.

if you makes threads about android bugs the wrong way, you're going to have a hard time.

For the audio I would just use something like audiomanager, that makes it pretty easy to change any of the system audio levels.

For the other 2 I can't really comment, I just got my GS3 today and haven't had much time to play with it.

By default both do the same thing. The iPhone has a setting in the options to change it while Android you'll need an app to do it.

I have the same issue with the built-in speaker and messages and PowerAMP when playing music.

I think it is a software issue because the newest PowerAMP no longer does this.

Yup. Poweramp. My default answer to almost every music playback problem any of my Friends/Family has with Android.
