switched from iphone to android, having regrets...

So I recently got my samsung gs3. I'm loving the screen. However, there are several totally unacceptable fatal flaws with android that are seriously making me regret my purchase. I'm on the verge of going back to my iphone.

1) volume control is whacked. Why does the volume rocker control ringer volume? Who needs hard button access to adjust ringer volume on a constant basis? Also lowering the volume with the rocker plays the notification beeps for each volume step which defeats this point anyway. If I need to adjust ringer volume I'll go to the menu. The rocker buttons should only control media volume, whether media is playing or not so I can reduce the volume prior to putting headphones on, muting it before taking headphones off, etc. Also the first push of the volume button should just display the current volume, I shouldn't have to raise and lower the volume a notch just to see what the current level is.

2) alerts play through speaker, even when headphones or bluetooth is plugged in. Phone calls and text messages will blast full volume out the external speaker even when using headphones - completely and totally unacceptable. Not only do the alerts play through the speaker, but they also mute the media temporarily for no apparent reason. Apparently this has been a known bug for years but has never been fixed.

3) text editing in browser basically broken. there is no way to edit (i.e. select, copy, paste) text in text boxes in any of the browsers. I've tried firefox and chrome with swiftkey and samsung keyboards. The text manipulation is glitched beyond usability in any of them.

There have been other minor issues but these three have been the worst so far. Is there any fix for them?

Um, it works exactly like it does with an iPhone, where the physical buttons control ringer volume as well... When you're actually listening/watching media, the buttons then control media volume. Both iOS and Android do this the same way.

I have a Galaxy Nexus not an S3, but a simple volume widget will take care of your audio request. You can setup widgets that cycle between the various ringer modes (silent, vibrate, ring) and there are also widgets that give you access to all volume settings with one press. I generally don't see the need though, my volume settings stay set to what I had them independent from the ringer volume.

I've never experienced this alerts through speaker bug? Actually this is the first time I've ever even heard about it...

Text editing in the browser works for me.

1) is personal preference, I personally can't see why anyone would want the volume rocker to only control media volume. That said there are ways around this but XDA Developers appears to be down at the moment so I can't look them up at the moment. On AOKP roms there is an option that lets you bring up all of the volume levels when you hit one of the volume keys.

2) Seems to be a issue. I'm not sure how to fix that one

3) I can't duplicate this issue, copy and paste work fine in the stock ICS browser as well as Chrome.

Lmao..I saw this same post over at android central.
1) Total personal preference on your part. Never been an issue with me.
2) No problems like that with my phone(galaxy nexus-your phones older brother). Must be a software or hardware glitch. depending on which speaker I use-handset, bluetooth or headphone, all sound come from appropriate source.
3) Copy/paste works fine for me in all text boxes, on stock browser and chrome, not firefox, must be issue with firefox. to copy & paste, double tap where you want to copy.

If you go back to your iPhone you will have the same disappointment because the volume control does not work the way you remember it. If you use the volume buttons without headphones plugged in you are not adjusting the headphone volume, you are adjusting the speaker volume if media is playing. If no media is playing then you are adjusting the ringer volume. Once you plug in your headphones the volume settings change over to headphone volume and you have to adjust the level to wherever you want it.

Also, my 4S mutes my media when I get a notification as well. If it didn't, how would I hear the notification? I actually wish I could turn this feature off but I haven't found a way to do it yet.

You can set the iPhone volume control to control notification volumes.......... or media volume. It's an option in the settings. Android defaults to ringer only.

By default both do the same thing. The iPhone has a setting in the options to change it while Android you'll need an app to do it.

I have the same issue with the built-in speaker and messages and PowerAMP when playing music.

I think it is a software issue because the newest PowerAMP no longer does this.

1: no problems with the volume behavior, personal preference I suppose.

2: audio plays via the appropriate channel (if headphones are in, all alerts and everything go through the headphones)

3: long press on text and you'll then be able to select or highlight, etc.

1. I don't really like the fact that it makes noise when I am turning it up or down either, but I have just lived with it.

2. Never had that problem before.

3. Also never had that problem, of course I am still on Gingerbread cause I have an older phone.

OP has regrets for basic things. Some of which dont happen. I think OP needs to chill and learn how to use his new phone better before regretting anything.

Is OP trolling or still a android virgin?

1) ok I recognize this is personal preference. But there are no apps in the android store which duplicate the iphone option. Also it is annoying that muting the ringer does not mute media sounds, and inserting headphones/bluetooth do not unmute/restore media volume.

2) this is a known long-standing bug apparently, only recently fixed in Jelly Bean: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=16667

3) this is an intermittent problem when trying to edit text in text boxes such as on the anandtech forum reply boxes. Specifically, the selection pointers either do not place where I click them, or do not select the text that is in between them. Apparently also a known bug. edit - this may be a bug in chrome only, will try out firefox for a while and see if it happens there.

I was going along just fine until my phone ringer went off while my headphones were plugged in at work, while my boss & manager & director were standing near by. All three inquired what I was doing, etc. Very embarrassing and unprofessional situation.

and yes its really fing annoying

1) you can change in settings/aps - never had an issue with it but its all ive ever known so im used to it

There is likely a way to get the behavior you want from the volume buttons but it wouldn't be on the Play Store. Check over at XDA Developers, it's the main source for Android modding and will be your best bet for fining something like that. Alternatively quick settings or a similar widget should help.

Try Chrome if you have not already. For what it's worth I have never seen that issue on any of my Android devices including ones running Touchwiz.

Thinking about cancelling ad on the for sale forum, lol. The reason why I switched though is because I got fed up with the small screen and tiny keyboard with bad autocorrect.

my android phone does all notification through headphones if one is plugged it, also it pauses what media is playing if anything is plugged in or unplugged

I assumed they muted temporarily so you could......hear the notification over the media!

Yeah but the notification goes through the headphones AND the external speaker. Also it doesn't pause the media, it just mutes it (causing me to miss part of whatever I was listening to).

Do it man. Cancel the for sale thread and return your S III. It'll be the best decision you'll make.
