I get much more use out my gerber multitool than I would any Swiss army knife.

I dont need a multitool as much as I used to, but I do keep my leatherman surge in my laptop/book bag.

I have a leatherman micra on my keychain just because, but ill sooner pull the swiss army knife out of my pocket for minor stuff. The leatherman does come in handy enough to keep it around.

If you have to choose what to buy...maybe a leatherman skeletool, since its smaller and lighter and still feature packed. if you can get both...you can get a basic swiss army knife for under 20 to keep in your pocket, and have a leather or gerber handy for other stuff

lol, men don't need tools on them to feel manly. Going out to dinner or a bar or the movies and bringing tools with you doesn't make you look manly, it makes you look weird. Like one of those weirdos that has a vest or cargo pants with tons of pockets stuffed with tools and condiments.

When I whip out some Grey Poupon from my cargo pants and save your little brunch you'll have some real egg on your face then. Won't you?

Swiss Army. The Leatherman steel is too brittle for my use. It's harder, and stays sharp longer, but it breaks easier. I carry a knife to use and abuse, and I severely misuse my knives. The Swiss Army holds up to abuse much better.

Multi-tool when I remember to put it in my briefcase. I have the CC tool pictured in the OP. I don't use it as I'm afraid I'll leave it in my briefcase when I fly and end up getting assraped in Morocco. Overall, I prefer individual purpose built tools to any type of multitool. A cheap screw driver trumps the best multitool/knife when you have a screw before you. I love racheting screwdrivers with the extra bits stored in the handle.

I never thought I'd see a steel snob in a discussion like this. Congrats.

Leatherman Wave for me. Can't even count the number of times I use it during the day.

My favorite part about this things is now that it's broken in, I can get a straight blade, serrated blade, saw, file, or pliers in just a few seconds and with only one hand.

I'd be lost without that thing.

 What do you do to them? Most of the Leatherman steel is only 420HC which is fairly soft for knife steel and won't chip very easily. I don't want to know what would happen if I let you use my S30v pocket knife D:

Repeat after me: my knife is not a prybar or screwdriver:awe:

i have a knives of alaska liner lock folder made of D2 tool steel if i really need to cut something in addition to my multi-tool. swiss army steel is not very quality and you can pry on things with the screw driver or jaws of a good multitool with out breaking it.

I agree in general, but if I'm using a multitool, it's probably my only tool available, so improvising's necessary. I've broken the blade twice, and broken 2 of the screwdrivers in my original Leatherman. I broke the pliers in my Swiss Champ, but otherwise the metal's just bent. A little tweaking, it's almost as good as new. Really, they're both worth having, and if I'm outfitted for work, I carry both. If I'm only going to carry 1 though, the Swiss Army wins every time.

I keep Victorinox Swisstool X on my belt... Aside from the best craftsmanship, they have the best multitool pliers on the market.

I carry a Leatherman Skeletool.

It's great - I can get the blade out with one hand, and (let's be honest here) I don't need to open it or anything to use the bottle opener.

You use them for convenience in places where you cannot bring your toolbox, are you dense?

i've carried a leatherman pulse for a dozen years, and a swiss army knife on occasion. at no time have they produced a satisfactory screwdriver, knife, et cetera when it was needed. these are shitty tools for doing a shitty job. the price is heavily padded with useless "features" like pathetic saws, files. scissors and a toothpick. yeah, like i'm going to put that in my mouth.

"but what if.....in an emergency...."
then you're screwed and these toys aren't likely to help. are you telling me you are going to fix a broken-down car with a swiss army knife? gtfoutta here. you would be very fortunate to have a car break down in a way that was fixable by these things, possess the knowledge to repair it, and not have the multitool break on you. congratulations.

if i had to pick a winner between these over-rated duds, i'd say large multi-tool, because it would have pliers and the largest blade possible. still, they are more limited than most people expect, and very prone to breakage.

I always carry my Leatherman Surge. It is very handy to have, when I don't have my tools with me. It is, however, quite bulky, and have been thinking about getting one of the skeletools.

I used to carry a multi-tool all the time, recently I realized that I'm usually in one or two situations when I need tools, in all others I need a knife.

So to save space on my body, I switched to carrying a small assisted opening knife and keeping two tool kits. One tool kit is in my laptop bag, and the other is in my car. Both are geared to the kinds of jobs where I find myself needing tools. (Bigger tools in the car, smaller tools and wire crimpers in my laptop bag).

So now my waist is a small concealed pistol and a small knife. My bag and car hold my tools.

in no way does vitronox have the best pliers on the market. SOG is right up there and has by far the most griping power because off the gear system and extra leverage. also, they are replacable for 10 bucks.
Gerber has the best cutters with the removable and replaceable blades on the pliers head.

There's hardly a useless tool on my knife. Probably the least used is the magnifying glass. I'd say a lack of use for a multi-tool shows a lack of imagination ;^)
