Ok, here's the deal. I've been setting my virtual memory in Windows 98se to a static setting - roughly 2 and 1/2 times the amount of RAM installed on the system. However, 2 things:

1 - I've recently purchased a kraaplode of RAM because it is dirt cheap - 512MB to be precise (total cost=$130). Is it really prudent to have a swap file that is 1.2GB large??!!! It leads me to believe that there must be an optimal number to set it for when you have so much RAM - true? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

2 - At work, we just upgraded to Win2K. Now, in the same vein as above, is there even a swapfile/virtual memory setting in Win2k? And if so, how do you manipulate it?

Thanks!!

Best way to optimize swap file usage is this. Set it to something small as a minimum, maybe like 50MB. Open up all the applications you'd ever run, maybe like a couple Netscape windows, Winamp, Office, DVD software, etc. While everything is running, check to see what your swap file has grown to. Round up to the nearest 10, tack on another 20, and set that as your new minimum.

And yes, there is a swap file setting for Win2K. Think it was under sytem->performance->the advanced memory settings, forgot what it was called. You can actually specify multiple swap files on multiple drives if you need to split it up, still need about a 20MB minimum on C: though. Plus if you're running server, you'll need to have however many MB of ram in your system free on C: in order for it to save RAM memory dumps.

Set both numbers in W2K to 192MB (maybe a little bigger if you need it)...but the key is to make both numbers the same so W2K doens't change the size when it wants to...
