My GF's family is out here in Colorado (im in Littleton, and work in Centennial.. used to work at Arrow over there in Inverness) so we moved to CO and found work within a month of moving here.

What most fail to realize, is that if swampies are not regularly cleaned they are a perfect breeding ground for legionnaires to grow. Set bleed to full pace and clean regularly.

I used a chlorine spray to clean them out. Also the bearings are of low quality and the pulleys are plastic. The motors are crap as well.

Your better of with normal air conditioning.

Swamp cooler animation

Swamp cooler use much less electricity that AC and don't require the house to be sealed up like a crypt as with AC. With swamp coolers you get a constant supply of fresh air moving through the house. However their ability to cool drops sharply with rising humidity level.

Buy a good cooler and you get an excellent motor, steel pulleys, and good bearings. You get what you pay for. Yes, they do need to be cleaned and the pads replaced at least yearly.

of course, a swamp cooler wouldnt be too effective in a place like texas....

edit: it is very dry here in the front range. its been keeping my house between 65-68* when "on" (no temp control). it runs 24/7....noisy but you get acclimated to it

This.
It's technology that pre-dates today's refrigerated air conditioning...and was the best you could get for home use for many decades.
They definitely work best in dry climates, as the evaporative process adds quite a bit of moisture to the air in the house, even with good air flow...which is a MUST for them to circulate air properly.

Hell, I'm old enough to remember swamp coolers for cars back in the late 50's and early 60's...before AC became more-or-less standard on cars.

I've never heard of a swamp cooler...

If they are meant for dry climates, why are they called swamp coolers? Swamps are already humid enough.

A swamp cooler uses the evaporation of water to cool the air.

Look at this Physchrometric Chart.

If the dry bulb temperature is 100F and the humidity ratio is 0.006, you can cool the air to about 67F.

If the dry bulb temperature is 100F and the humidity ratio is 0.002, you can cool the air to 60F.

If it is extremely humid, however, the swamp cooler may only shave off 10F.

Hey Safeway. Do you have a replacement image for that? One that doesn't look like it's been faxed 100 times? One we can read? :p

im from az, ive always had ac instead of swamps. i hated going to places that used swamp coolers, especially bars. they were always sticky and muggy. when we moved to texas for a few months and stayed with family, pretty much everyone in the town of brady had swamp coolers in their house, which didnt make sense to me.

Do a Google Image search for Physchrometric Chart.

Even after three years of using the chart, I still misspell it! (Architectural Engineering) Ugh.

Cooling towers breed legionnaires, too. Risk vs. Utility dictates that we continue using both cooling towers and evaporative coolers.

I hate swamp coolers. Used to live in Utah, and all the cheap college apartments had them. Finally moved into a place that didn't and bought a proper a/c...

Now living in Hawaii and nobodies heard of a swap cooler...

Cooling towers are commonly use in industrial application in my area, but slowly geothermal heating/cooling is taking over.

<---- geothermal heatpump specialty :)

If you leave the re-circulation pump running and use aspen pads (not that cardboard crap) the chances of breeding legionella is very low. The total dissolved solids in swamp cooler water is extremely high, either at the saturation point for calcium carbonate or even supersaturated due to evaporation. If you turn off the pump and let the water stagnate then you might have problems. Shocking the cooler with bleach is a good maintenance practice.
