Is calling an Air Conditioner a Swamp Cooler a regional thing? When i lived in NYC, i never once heard of a swamp cooler..

Now that i live in Colorado, all people talk about is "getting their swamp cooler up and running this weekend"

its known as an evaporative cooler. This is not an AC type of unit. Its consists of a blower, fan, and this fiberish material were water is run through. This has an effect to cool the air down cheaply. Works best in dry hot climates.

It's not that it's not efficient, it's that it won't be much more comfortable. Air conditioners both cool and dry the air - swamp coolers cool and moisten the air.

it only functions in super dry air.
so its very regional. use one where its not super dry and it'll just sit there wasting electricity doing squat.

Swamp coolers are alright for many areas, but where I live, we'd rather just go without. The humidity is much worse than the heat.

In order for a swamp cooler to be effective, you have to have constant fresh air circulation. A lot of people just try to use a swamp cooler the way they use an A/C unit -- with the windows closed -- and all they end up doing is adding a lot of humidity and making themselves more miserable.

Don't give up. Some day the retards will learn :p

To his credit, he wasn't asking what it is. He's asking if it's a regional thing.

On Wikipedia it says what regions they are primarily used in.

Its mainly for older homes though. New builds almost always have a traditional central air setup, its better for resale.

Guyver01 wtf happened that you moved to CO? Another transplant from the big apple :)....I'm over in the centennial airport area a lot.

It's not just for homes. A couple years ago I walked into a NAPA auto parts store and they had a 6-foot tall fan going on their massive swamp cooler. 100+ outside and frozen nipples inside is exhilarating!
