why did everything on my hard drive that I spent 2 years compiling just turn to crap?!?"
I think it's safe to say we know where the data corruption comes from..I myself have fallen victim to it, paying for a good rounded cable is not a choice(it is essential) I would make again after experiencing making my own just once. Try it sometime with a cable that you have as a junker, then try a dual device cable. See how much time it takes and if you dare try leaving it in your system for a while, I think you will come to my findings as well.

Just received my order. I ordered rounded cables in blue and yellow (10", 18" and 24"). If I had to do it over again, I would get the clear or maybe the glow-in-the-dark cables, which are just a little more expensive. NONE of mine were shielded, although SVC said they were (and the colors varied between the different sizes). Hrumph. Caveat emptor!!!

Have they opened up a retail storefront yet? The last time I went to pickup some stuff they were still based out of the western union.

Was down there this Mon to pick up some supplies. Looks like they're still working on the store front, had to walk around back to get inside. Supposedly they quit doing wholesale contracts so now they sell directly to us. They're charging lower prices but doing more volume so in the end their sales numbers are just fawking crazy, they're having a very good time.

Against what I said in an earlier post, I ordered two rounded black cables, 2 copper heatsinks, and 5 120mm fan grills. I selected priority shipping as my choice of delivery. It made no difference to me when they came because I have no immediate use for any of these things. Wel, the USPS misrouted my package and it took 7 days to get my package. With my dumb luck that I have, SVC screwed up and sent me 5 18" rounded cables instead of the 2 I ordered. They seem alright but are not shielded as the poster above said. I doubt it will make a difference in my situation.

Where in the world do you guys see which ones are shielded and which one's aren't.
Is there something in the descriptions that I'm missing?
'BTW remember how I said I ordered a few days before posting this, well my order got sent to somewhere on than to me.
I still haven't gotten my stuff.
Bummer.

Before I click to confirm this order with SVC, I need a little help gang. I need really short cables, about 10" would be perfect. Does anyone make them shorter than 18" for ATA100/133?? I have the 10" floppy silver in my cart, and 18" dual silver (wanted 2 singles). Several have mentioned these are *not* shielded... Would prefer to have the shielded variety, as this is for an audio production pc, and I need all the help I can get... Thanks!

I ordered 2x blue and 2x black the blue ide cables arent really blue.. they are more of a babyish blue same as the clear 'blue' case fans ... it doesnt look good with my case neon blue light...anyway the blue and black ide cables arent 'shielded' theres like a little part at the connections that are just like hanging not covered. out but i dunno it doesnt seem to be affecting my operation right now...

Forgot to ask: Those of you with 18" cables from SVC, what is the connector spacing? 0....10....18"? I should be able to whack the extra connector off with a razor blade like I do the flat cables.

Sweet, now data corruption costs EVEN LESS!!! Sorry, I hate to thread crap, but gah...use flat cables if you value your data.

Can you please provide us with some PROOF? I'd like to know if I just wasted $23 or if you're full of... ;)

Don't worry, he's full of it ;) I have two rounded ATA-133 cables on my CD-RW and DVD drives (one was on my IDE hard drive when I had it) and have never had any corruption problems. I now have a SCSI hard drive drive and am about to order a rounded SCSI cable for it

Yeah, I used to use rounded cables, never had a problem with them. Still, like Frglss said, they are technically out of spec. So, just to be ultra-safe (because that's how I try to be), I run flat cables now. Running round cables probably won't cause problems, but I wouldn't do it in a major server holding tons of important data.

Did anybody pick up any of these silver rounded cables? The ones that are $.75 extra? I'm wondering if someone can confirm if they're shielded or not.

I need quite a few of these cables and am thinking about getting 4 different colors for each PC so I can tell which wires are which (I have a double-wide case (not a double wide trailer home) with the mobo on one side and the drive cage on the other side of a big metal divider).

However, if the silver ones are shielded I'll probably pick them up, as I need 36" cables and the shielding would be nice. FYI, I've been using 36" cables on 8 drives for about a year and a half now, and I haven't seen any corruption (yet). Dunno if that says anything or not...

Does anyone know if/where there is hard evidence/proof etc.... of rounded cables verses flat cables and in spec cables vs out of spec (ie longer cables) with regard to data corruption.

I called TDK about a CD burner I have, and the "tech" on the phone was retired from the electronic wiring biz, and he says that emi or other electronic interference, etc, or something like that, is higher when cables are folded over or close to each other like when you put a cable tie around them....he also said something like it's better to just let em hang......He further stated that a problem with rounded cables is that all the wires are now in close proximity of each other, unlike with a flat cable where the pin 1 wire is at the opposite end , etc. Then another "tech" says something about the 18" maximum spec is old and has never been "updated" with respect to newer systems, equipment, cases, etc.... he said that never had a problem with 24 or even 36" cables. Guys with full towers have run them for ages w/o a problem. THEN, I had to call MAXTOR tech support for something else, and the guy on the phone refutes all the other guy said, and says, can't be longer than 18"....put the drives, etc., in the lower bays........

Anyway, now I'm so confused, undecided, I don't even remember my own name.........anyone have any facts on the cable issue?

You gonna compare that to perfectly rounded cables (possibly even glow-in-the-dark)? Pfft I say! Pfft!

Heres what sexay rounded cables should look like:

Pix0r

My case would look better when I get some of those glowinthedark cables and a UV light.

I just picked up another GC68 with a Panaflo, three more 80mm Panaflos's and two rounded IDE cables and one floppy, all braided silver. :)

a lot of ppl are running rounding for a while, so i doubt it's a big problem. But yeah, if you're on some critical comp, i wouldn't chance it. And even on your own comp, you should back up your important stuff periodically anyway :p

i got some a couple weeks back.. beats my "duct tape rounding" to the floor :p a lot easier to manage too. hehe.

How can you tell if the cables are shielded or not? I bought some silver rounded cables form SVC. They're very thick, and the tech said they're shielded, but is there something I can look for to confirm?

http://www.casecooler.com/ideata66roun.html

they're more expensive, but the shielded cables are advertised as so (they seem to be made by Vantec). Also have 12" single-device ATA cables.

This was the first google hit for "shielded round ata cables"

[edit: also see the feedback at http://forum.taconuts.org/topicDisplay.php?topicID=69]

Most articles on SerialATA technology have mentioned that adapters will be available for older 40-pin connectors. It seems like that would be the better route to take. (Although I did order a couple of ugly yellow round floppy cables recently - I kind of doubt they'd be as susceptible to the problems round cables suffer from.)
