Sad part was that the A weapon was the only way to pacify the Japanese.
:(
That was the only way to make them surrender and quit playing the stupid, unnecessary war.

Edit: Feel sorry for the guy, but, the Japanese government brought it upon itself.

Who are you kidding? You don't feel sorry for him. You somehow found a way to walk into a memorial thread for some poor guy who was victim to two atomic bombs and turn it into some political rant against the Japanese. Who raised you?

The fact you continued what you believe to be a political bitch session tells me: "The same parents as you".

The pacification of Japan is the direct result of the US showing Japan and its people what real power is. Look at the Japanese today. Do they have a culture that celebrates flying planes into buildings and blowing up innocents in busses? No. They have been pacified by power. That is what our current enemies don't understand. They don't understand what real terror is. They don't understand death and destruction. They just think they do. That is why they continue to fight. They think they can win. We must show them just how wrong they are. Everyone knows this.

:) good stuff

lets not forget about all the koreans who were enslaved by imperial japan during this time. after the first bomb, many who were slaving in the industrial city of hiroshima that day were transferred to the nearest industrial city that hasnt been nuked (nagasaki).

it is unknown how many koreans died in japan slaving for the japanese war effort, and it is also unknown how many of these slaves got nuked once or twice.

Have you ever even been in conventional combat? Have you ever looked death in the eye? Do you have an inkling what life is all about? Are you as incredibly ignorant is you seem?

I'm just asking.

lol, you have no idea what you're talking about. There were still Japanese soldiers manning positions on islands well into the 1970s. Also, I doubt the arabs would give a fuck about a nuke or two. They'd still fight.

We certainly bombed the hell out Germany and Japan, they are such peace loving people now. The nukes weren't even close to being the deadliest bombing raids against civilians. I wonder how many wars have we won using smart bombs to minimize death and destruction. War is ugly and nasty business, people should realize this, especially politicians.

Not many...if any at all.

The first major use of precision guided weapons was in the first Gulf war. (laser-guided bombs have more-or-less been around since late in the Vietnam War, but not used much until 1991) I suppose we can saw we won the Gulf war...even if we didn't really FINISH that one...:p

I'm going to repost something I wrote in P&N about this issue for adlep et al.
So, I'm at work (Japanese public elementary school) and asked to borrow a 6th grade Social Studies textbook.

The last chapter covers the 'Long War' period as it's phrased in the book, 1931-1945.
My Japanese isn't great so I can't understand everything written contextually, but here's the exact Japanese text, the literal English translation, and my rough translation:

When I occupied capital Nanjing (Nanjing), many Chinese who included a soldier and a woman and the child who threw away a weapon were killed. I was not informed of this to the Japanese nation.

During the occupation of Nanjing, many Chinese soldiers, women, and children were killed even after surrendering. Normal Japanese citizens were not informed of this.

They explicitly acknowledge the army killed innocent women and children but don't go into detail about how, or how many. The last sentence gives the impression normal citizens didn't know of these events (implying a cover up by the army) but I've seen Japanese newspaper reports from that period about a beheading competition; so partially false.

If occupation left Nanjing of the capital, Japan thought that war was over early. However, the Chinese people strengthened resistance for Japanese aggression and the war could ask for Japanese expectation and I had a long it and continued.

The occupation of Nanjing was supposed to bring about a swift resolution to the war. However, it only strengthened the resolve of the Chinese people against Japanese aggression and extended the length of the war far beyond Japanese expectations.

Sound familiar? Pretty much straightforwardly saying that the brutality had the opposite effect of what was intended and the strategy of the army was misguided and wrong.

The next paragraph is a caption to a picture of kneeling, presumably surrendered, Chinese soldiers with Japanese officers reviewing the group on horseback.

The Japanese armed forces which occupy Nanjing.
A lot of soldiers were dispatched in China, and the ring was enlarged.

I'm going to assume 'ring was enlarged' probably refers to the Japanese sphere of influence. The picture itself is tame, just people with not even a weapon visible.

Evidently, the issue of Nanking is addressed as early as 6th grade in my city. These students are 12-13 years old so I do have to give some leniency not to include graphic descriptions of the slaughter. Tomorrow, I work at a junior high school so I'll try to get a hold of a 3rd (9th) grade history textbook to see if more accurate details of the transgressions are given in upper grades.

It's always interested me how Auschwitz = Nazis but Nanking != Japanese Imperial Army. US history attempts to delineate German genocide from the civilian population but aggregates all Japanese people into one monolithic organ responsible for every atrocity committed during the war which then justifies the use of weapons of mass destruction against two cities.

From this we can conclude that their are in fact vast untapped health benefits from nukes. 93 is old!
