Physicians are generally the ones who have to diagnose mental illnesses in people. And, perhaps its a good idea to restrict somebody who suffers from bipolar disorder or paranoid schizophrenia access to guns.

Im not talkiing about rights so much as why it might be a physicians business to know about your firearms.

But why does the doctor need to know then? If you have something that makes you unstable, they can submit information saying Joe Schmoe is not allowed to own a gun, or must seek diagnosis from a specialist to be cleared. At that point, the police may get a warrant to remove the guns (and the person can challenge the addition to the list.)

I don't tell strangers I have guns. I just...don't. I would never answer on a poll that I own guns. Also, I remember in gun threads here over the years people quoted statistics on gun ownership - I warned those statistics were based on voluntary polls and thus inaccurate...

It's about assessing the patient's current situation. When everything is considered, perhaps that might dictate a 72-hour hold, or a phone call to social services, for example.

I gave you ONE example, there are many other reasons why it might be good for a doctor to know the situation at home.
What about new parents, they bring a baby home, Doctor might say, ohh, hey, make sure you remember to lock your guns or secure them so that the baby wont find them when they learn how to crawl around and get into everything ....

Sometimes doctors are just "a smart person who shares common sense type things."

Its true the doctor does not need to know about how many guns a person has, but, there is nothing wrong with a doctor asking. The doctor can ask, and if you dont want to talk guns, you can say "I dont want to talk about guns" and you can evade all you want. However, doctors should be able to ask any question that could be relevant to the health of the patient.
