Surprised how ridiculously expensive the Cadillac CTS is.

I'll tell you what is really a killer as far as price goes. Since I got the CTS, my wife decided that she really wants an Escalade Hybrid. She likes driving the CTS but she is so used to driving our Trailblazer that she likes sitting up high. The base price on it is $73K. I'm hoping I can talk her out of that one.

don't be one of those people. i fucking hate escalades 😛

If you met my wife, you'd know why I'd buy her just about anything she wanted that I could afford. Just curious though, why do you hate Escalades?

and hence we get a bunch of SUVs that block other people's view of traffic so that now they have to sit up high too.

ah the downward spiral.

Ha ha! That is a good one. Being from the D/FW area, I'd say that hardly anyone here has given up their pickups or SUvs. So much so that the GM plant in Arlington is working 2 shifts again cranking out more SUVs, so someone has to be buying them.

Yea, I know, a really expensive hybrid. But at least for as large of a vehicle it gets 22 city, 23 highway, but in my opinion it isn't worth the $8,000 price difference. The little amount of driving she does, she'd have to drive it 14 years to reach breakeven on fuel savings.

Ditch the "high seeting" and buy the CTS Wagon...so beautiful. I understand the needing to appease the wife part though.

i think they're hideous to begin with, and when people try and make them "look better" by putting on the most hideous chrome wheels, it only gets worse.

Yes, we went with an Audi A4 Quattro. To be honest almost all of the cars in that segment (BMW 3, Infiniti G, Audi A4, Cadillac CTS, Acura TSX V6, and IS) are all really awesome cars. A4 just hit all the right buttons for what we wanted this car to be (my wife's car).

Yeah, I see lots of A4's being driven by women. What would you have gone for? (To get the man's perspective?)

I liked the A4 a lot (I am partial to Audi styling and interiors). I may have even gone with the A4 as well...but with a manual for sure. From a manly perspective, the biggest problem with the A4 is the engine. Perfectly adequate and peppy...but a 300HP+ engine would definitely suite my tastes more. I may have tried to justify throwing another 10K at it and getting the S4. Of the other cars we looked at...I probably would have gone for a used 335i (with manual) or a new G37 (with manual). The engines in both of those models are sublime. I didn't test drive the S4...but I've heard the engine in that is the equal to the one in the 335 (which feels like perfection with how smooth the power delivery is). Another car that I didn't get to test drive, but I definitely would have liked to try and find one if we were buying my car would be the Pontiac G8 GXP. I know they are rare and Pontiac is going away...but it fits right in price range wise and what an engine. Even 4 doors and large...so practical as well with our likely upcoming family in the near future.

On a side note, we drove the A4 over 1K miles over Thanksgiving holidays to see family. We were babying it to some degree for break in (varying speeds, rarely gunning it, etc)...but the car got 31.8 MPG average (trip computer said 33.6...but the 31.8 was from gas tank fill up/odometer reading). Not bad for a car that does 0-60 in ~6.5 seconds, has AWD, and is using the automatic (the manual gets better gas mileage in this car). While I would have loved the engine in the G37...getting that kind of gas mileage on trips and still having a car with plenty of power is nice...definitely way more than adequate for my wife's car.

jesus i retract my comment, i thought this was about the STS

CTS and its competition would easily fetch 50k in Canada however..

This gen of CTS is replacing the STS. The 1G CTS was smaller than the new one. The new CTS is about the size of a 5-series, and with similar options/motor choices.

the VP here picked one up for his wife. its got black 20" rims on it, as well as limo tint all around and blacked out accessories. only thing color on the outside is the cadillac emblem. i think it looks pretty cool, and i generally dont like escalades. usually i think they look too flashy and cheesy. ill see if i can get a pic of it next time she visits the office.

Are you sure? On the Caddilac website the have both the STS and DTS as 2010 models and they are more expensive than the CTS.

Thanks for the info...I'm starting to think about getting a new car maybe next July or August and have been debating between a new A4 or going with a 2007-2008 S4, 335i coupe, S5, or CTS-V.

fwiw, that's the only plant making the texas station wagon anymore. the other 2 or 3 plants got switched to other cars. so it may be they had to increase production of them there, but production is way down from where it was a couple years ago.

I took a liking to the CTS Coupe, and thought to myself...wow, finally a nice American coupe!

I just can't get over the racial overtone of owning a Cadillac. Where I live, only Black people own Cadillacs, often with huge rims on it. I'd hate to be one of "those" guys. (Fake HipHop/Gangster wannabe DUB fans -- not being racist per se.)

For a split second, I did like the Coupe though.

Definitely drive a 2009+ A4 or 2010+ S4 before going with the 2007-2008 S4. The pre-2009 car just isn't as dynamically pleasing as the newer B8 platform IMHO.

Of the list you mentioned, a A4 manual, S5, or 335 Coupe would be best unless you can afford a brand new CTS-V. Of course, test drive all of them...everyone has different preferences and needs.

One thing about the A4 with the 2.0T is that you can improve the engine performance fairly easily with ECU-flashing.
