Surprised how ridiculously expensive the Cadillac CTS is.

I haven't driven the CTS but the interior was definitely on par with zee Germans. When it first came out I hated the exterior styling but it has kind of grown on me. Far be it for me to heap praise on an American car but I haven't heard anything bad about the driving or handling...seems to me that you are wrong.

I agree with that. At first the chicken wire, in your face styling was akward, but it has grown to me as well. It's still a bit sudden, but I dig it.
I have yet to try out a current CTS but have blasted around in a '05 CTS-V. Fun ride, but the interior was nothing to call home about. The latest is hands down far superior.

I recently did drive a CTS and a host of other cars in this category (Audi, BMW, Infiniti, Lexus, Acura) when making a purchasing decision. The only reason why we didn't get the CTS was because of the exterior styling (we liked the interior) and the fact that my wife couldn't get over the "grandma" perspective most people have of Cadillac (silly women). The car drove very nicely....and while I have not driven one...I know the CTS-V would be a freak'n blast to own...definitely the best value for your money when you step up to that segment.

You only say that because you haven't driving one. If I want to drive it like a stick, all I have to do is push the shifter to the right, then I can shift through all 6 gears, and it won't upshift until I bump the shifter forward. I know because I drove it excidedly and was shifting it around 6,000 rpm (it would have gone higher). I drive stick shifts all the time and in manual shift mode, this CTS will shift faster than I could ever shift with a manual transmission. I'd say you'd have to be pretty well practiced to do it.

My wife's car will do that too and hers has the paddle shifters as well but honestly, it just feels like a slush box you can hold in a gear.

I like automatics for daily driving but please...don't compare them to the experience of shifting a car with a traditional manual transmission. It's not the same...not even close.

All I'm saying is what I've experienced. I driven and owned multiple manual trans vehicles over the years. I know that I really like the way the CTS shifts in manual mode, and it isn't a dog with the computer doing the shifting while in automatic mode. I'm just saying, try it before you knock it because it ain't your Grandma's Cadillac.

I don't think anyone said it auto wasn't faster, unless I missed it.

That's the whole reason GM took the automatic around the 'ring, because it was faster in their testing experiences.

I don't know why I even bother posting other than for the fact that people should not listen to the naysayers and should base their opinion on actually driving a vehicle, reguardless of what that vehicle may be. I test drove BMW's, Lexus', etc. before I made a decision on the CTS. I bought what I liked most. But I don't go around bashing all the other vehicles I didn't choose. If you don't want to drive a CTS and experience it for yourself, it's no skin off my nose.

What are you talking about? I don't care that the auto is faster...nor am I in the market for a new car. I wouldn't base my opinion off which was faster according to some auto rag but on which one I enjoyed driving more. I've yet to drive an auto that I enjoyed driving more than a manual.

I agree though, you should definitely test drive any car before buying.

Yeah they start the Caddy with the non-DI 3.0 w/270hp for $36.7k. The 3.6L DI V6 with 304hp starts at $43k.

That's fairly typical though, look at the 230hp 328i and 528i pricing.

Yes, we went with an Audi A4 Quattro. To be honest almost all of the cars in that segment (BMW 3, Infiniti G, Audi A4, Cadillac CTS, Acura TSX V6, and IS) are all really awesome cars. A4 just hit all the right buttons for what we wanted this car to be (my wife's car).

It really was. There wasn't a car in the group that I wouldn't be perfectly happy with to be honest. Sure we liked the styling, interior, features, engines, etc of some over others...but all of them were great. And we love the car...love it more each day we drive it.

I dare say the 'entry-lux' segment is the most competitive section of autos these days in terms of having so many really good choices. Only the full-size Truck market seems to rival it. I can think little bad to say about the full size entries from Ford, GM, Dodge, or Toyota, they're all competent and quite reliable (aside from the usual minor issues here and there, which are overstated by brand whores of one stripe or another).

I didn't pay that much for my 2008 3.6DI AWD Caddy and I agree that's a lot of money for the car. I think mine was $45k sticker and had everything I would want. At the time, a fully loaded one with every option was $52k which is probably what you looked at. The upside is that a decently equipped CTS has one of the best residual values in its class (right up there with the 3 series).

The CTS is also in a weird position in that it's larger than an A4 or 3 series and much closer to the A6 and 5 series. However the price is somewhere in the middle. The upcoming Caddy ATS should be more comparable to the 3 series, G37, A4, IS, and so on.

I'll tell you what is really a killer as far as price goes. Since I got the CTS, my wife decided that she really wants an Escalade Hybrid. She likes driving the CTS but she is so used to driving our Trailblazer that she likes sitting up high. The base price on it is $73K. I'm hoping I can talk her out of that one.
