Iraq cost, what, $1 trillion over 5 years? That is $200 billion/year compared to our 10 TRILLION spent since 2008. Considering both are a waste of money, shouldn't we be pissed off at the bailout which is the cost per year of 50 Iraq wars?

*edit

I'll try to be more fair and give you the benefit of the doubt, let us assume that it'll take Obama the remainder of 2009 to spend the $3 trillion he has promised to spend AND that he won't spend a dime beyond this. So we'll spread out that $10 trillion spent over 2 years. That is still, per year, the cost of 25 Iraq wars.

The bill, in roughly similar form has been around for over a week...Boehner is either a lazy ass or a liar.

The only parts that one would need to re-read are those that were amended or dropped altogether, and for that one would need minutes, not hours or (laughably) days.

How do you know that someone didn't slip something in the bill?

Exactly! Feralkid doesnt have an answer for that... his party can do no wrong.

I'm just waiting for Feralkid's alt, sierrita to come in and defend him.

Interestingly enough I'm now reading that while some Republicans wanted to hold up the bill and force a weekend vote, there were significant numbers of them (Inhofe for one) that didn't want to change their vacation plans to sit around in DC waiting.

So, it would appear that deciding to skip the 48 hour thing was at least a somewhat bipartisan choice.

Good God, why can't there be a discussion where you don't stoop to partisan hackery?

I am an American first and at least this bill has Unemployment insurance for Americans, payroll tax relief for Americans, food stamps for Americans which will alleviate impact on lower income groups in America and help boost consumer demand. Instead of the same for Iraqi's and paying off Sunni to stop killing our boys, but soon as bribes stop, they will kill again.

It all sucks J, but at least it's spent at home and on ours on our way out!

Republicans utterly failed in their stewardship of the Treasury and Economy so stop trying ot make them out as fiscally responsible all-of-a-sudden.

Was there anything hidden in the bill about relaxing the mark to market rule ?

Wondering the same thing but I'm pretty sure it was mentioned on CNBC and a couple other shows that this bill did NOT address that.

Frankly, I don't believe we should relax it. Assets should be marked at their fair market value, not whatever the banks believe their intrinsic value is worth. Think about it -- an asset is only worth what someone will pay for it. And if the market believes that pile of dung called CDOs, CLOs, and commercial real estate on a struggling bank's books is worth 10 cents on the dollar, then by golly, that's what it should trade for. Be a good lesson for the future too that leverage used improperly can be destructive.

Might this mark to market rule in a deflationary environment do real harm to otherwise "decent" companies? Yep. Cry me a fvckin river... (and I work on Wall St btw).

I have decided to embrace change. I asked because I don't care what they do, as long as I know which line to stand in to get the biggest prizes. Heh, heh.

wtf are you talking about?! you can't even admit that they lied, or that the bill was changed extensively during the last week.

Unlike most posters here, I don't associate with either party exclusively. I'm a right-leaning centrist who voted Dem in the last election. So your accusations of partisanship are entirely bullshit.

I call it like I see it -- always -- and both parties dropping the fucking ball. I'm getting tired of the lies...

Fair enough, JD I see the difference, my bad.
I mostly wanted to point out that there is no "alt". That was shens purported by jbourne77, investigated by the Mods, and dismissed as a shared computer sign-on error.

What, you've never shared things with your spouse?

They've had weeks to read it...

This idea that people are promoting this idea that congress is faced with reading the equivalent of War & Peace in 24 hours is a little disingenuous. It's not as if the entire bill has been re-written wholesale. The changes that resulted from whatever negotiating the senate/house have been doing are the only new parts that legislators are required to review - unless they've had their heads up their ass for the past few weeks. Even lip-moving republicans should be able to handle that. Only people who mindlessly parrot talk radio gibberish would believe that our fearless leaders could pass a $789 billion and not have people combing through it like vultures.

The Republicans won't read it because they don't need to read it because they are automatically voting no. You could put naked models interspersed between the pages, and they still wouldn't look at it. 48 hours, 48 days. It doesn't matter. Reading comprehension and thoughtful examination require nuance. It's something that this gang just doesn't do. When you're in lock step on the wrong side of history, details like actually reading a bill are unimportant.

Doesn't it seem a bit convenient that three senators agreed to go with the Dems? Two technically needed, but Kennedy not likely to vote.

Clearly the Republican leaders agreed to let this bill pass; yet provided only the necessary votes so that they could grandstand as the defenders of fiscal responsibility. The worse case scenario for them is that it works and the economy improves. If the Republicans are willing to play partisan chicken with the future of the nation, then let them do it, the American people will notice. Republicans have been in power for the last 8 years, getting whatever they want. The biggest pork obviously is the whole war in Iraq, We have been dealing with that pork at billions per week for the past 8 years.

Your entire theory is based on the success of this bill's effects on our economy.

Unlike you, however, I believe that the bill is a massive pile of waste/shit that will do absolutely nothing to help this country recover from the current economic mess. In fact, my bet is that it will have the exact opposite effect, which just might be what the Reps were betting on too -- at least a few of them.

It will be a while before you can state definitively whether or not they've been on the wrong side of history with this one...
