Wow...I read up on it and this was co-released with the cult of the dead cow? Apparently cDc is all into crytography for the internet in some big anti-censorship push.
While reading about this on wikipedia I also found out that l0pht is now part of Symantec!?!? Like...huh?!!?
Seriously this is really weird for me to read since back in high school (in the late 90's) cDc was known more for having made the most popular trojan horse of the day, and l0pht was known for having made one of the best password crackers for windows (although even then I think l0pht had a pretty white hat rep). But like...now they're all totally legit and part of Symantec and totally corporate?!?
When the hell did all the hackers decide to become human rights activists and Symantec employees. I almost feel like I've really gotten old just because they've gotten old and given up on doing the stupid crap you do when you're a young hacker.
Dammit, where's the next generation of scrappy hackers out there figuring out how to tone-dial for free from payphones or even writing a password cracking program. I'm not saying that illegal activity is good, but seriously when the hell did all the hackers stop breaking into computer systems and start...uhh...making anonymizing browsers and security software for symantec?!
Yeah I know a lot of this crap happened a bazillion years ago but I haven't really kept up on the hacker world, so it's just a little odd to finally look at the same hackers again and find they're part of Symantec lol.
Like...yeah like that movie Hackers. Yes it was hella stupid/bad, but back when I was in high school the hacker culture actually still sorta resembled that (seriously, down to the pants). No, not as far as the really bad 3D unix operating system and the "stacks" having lightening flying around (oh god that was horrible). But still, the movie got some of it right. After all, they filmed it in the right place (ok ok they filmed it at my high school which is probably why it kinda reminds me more of the hacker crowd at my high school ok?). My point is that, sure they did lots of stupid illegal stuff back then like the movie did lots of stupidly bad stuff-but they were also kinda what all the younger kids were kinda looking up to and trying to follow in the footsteps of (no I'm not talking about myself-but I was a computer nerd so the kids I hung out with were gonna be hacker wannabes). And if they're all totally boring now...who are the younger kids gonna look up to be their rebellious and insane hacker role models? Will the young script kiddies start doing bad attempts at human rights programming, or apply for internships at Symantec?
lol
