Supervolcano on Discover last night...

To skim it down to layman's terms, the volcano under Yellowstone blows and the world turns into a popsicle because the ash covers the atmosphere and blocks sunlight...
Food dwindles, utilities fail, and we are left scrambling for rescue...
The lava caldera under Yellowstone is mammoth compared to Mt St. Helens eruption that we experienced in the early 80s. The "movie" that was shown last night was highly dramatic, however, it was actually fully factual. They had many comaprisons and it felt like watching Bill Nye as they kept throwing in tidbits of info that are factual and realistic to say the least. If this sort of catastrophe does occur in my lifetime, I would be hardpressed to see the situation in a lighter view than I did last night...

Either Discover put a lil' too much stank on it and made it seem a tadbit unreal (Like Twiser was)...or they just scared the sh!t out of everyone that lives in the Northwest portion of the US...

Did they show both parts or just one? I downloaded the first part from a BBC airing but missed the second.

There was a thread not too long ago about how much the area around Yellowstone has risen over the past 50 years or so. It's a ridiculous number when compared to the rest of the world.

Very Very Very Slim,

Maybe in a million years, yes, but not now.

The one volcano could erup in our lifetime is the Las Palma Island in the canaries and Mt St Hellens.

I think the odds are pretty good that the Discovery Channel has sold out and makes crappy programs now. It used to be an educational channel that taught you scientific thinking and facts. Now they have a lot of brainless entertainment, drama, and fiction. They even had stupid shows about dragons, which didn't exist, and a series about animals which don't exist. That's entertainment, that's not educational.

I only caught small parts of the movie. But isn't it like every 300,000 years or something they expect yellow stone to blow. Maybe my numbers are off, but I am pretty sure I hear from an actual factual(not saying SuperVolcano wasn't factual, but I am talking about a normal discovery channel show)that we are well past when it was last expected to blow, so who knows it could go any time.

I think the odd are almost certain that one day something will happen. I hope before that day happens though people will develop a technology that can release some of the pressure before it blows. I wonder if anybody has experimented with deep drilling like that of offshore oil platforms to release some of the pressure?

I saw this when it was shown on the BBC.

It was pretty good, but a little annoying at times!

anybody see the one where they traced mytocondrial dna back to nly a population around 3000 people to a suprisingly recent time and it corresponded with what they think was a supervolcano eruption in south america?

Bingo, they've dumbed it down hardcore over the past 5-10 years for ratings. Sadly, it has worked :( They have what, 10 sister channels now?

600,000 years. Currently 640,000 since last eruption.

Back to topic:
They had a documentary AFTERWARD that had more disturbing info than the TV movie...

This guy has been studying volcanoes for years and said that a few years ago, 5 bison fell dead from CO2 poisoning on the river basin...and then they showed that the Caldera had moved upward around 35 inches...but in the same sentence quoted that the crust had slide along the Caldera rim enough to the point that the caldera was under 30 miles of crust, leaving no possible way for eruptible magma to explode outward...

I dunno...

Actually it was a couple hundred people. And that eruption in south america was only about 70,000 years ago.

I've been tracking this for the last year or two. The yellowstone volcano erupts pretty regularly every 630,000 years, and we're 10,000 years overdue :(

I mean seriously, what can one do about it. Say it explodes tomorrow. I know since i live in the east coast i will not be affected by it right away with ash and lava etc. But after few days or hours i don't know we would start to ge the ash in the atmosphere and start a volcanic winter.

Then what, do we continue with our day to day work or those the goverment come in and have underground location for all of us or just the president.

It's only erupted 3 times. Taking an average of the time differences is not good statistics. You should have paid more attention to the actual science they discussed after that crap drama.

Thank goodness I'm a survivalist. I keep emergency supplies stocked up at all times. And plenty of ammo to fend off those who laugh at me now....

I did watch it. It was pretty good. I liked the part where they kept getting stupid phone calls from the public so one of the USGS guys decides to be a smartass and tells one of them " Oh yeah, gonna blow any minute, complete devastation, we're all gonna die." LMAO!

No, they just like to give worst case scenarios because it's more sensational and makes the film more exciting. TDC has sold out.
