Superstar or not?

Okay, a friend of mine doesn't follow the UFC at all. The discussion was whether the UFC has any superstars. The definition of a superstar would have to be someone that people know who don't follow the sport. So, please answer the poll without cheating.

I think that most people can name someone in the UFC without following the sport avidly. He says that he couldn't name a single person. What about you guys?

It's not new, been around for quite a while. It is the premiere Mixed Martial Arts platform in the US. :)

I think most people know Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell. Liddell has even been in a couple mainstream movies.

I think it's a bit early for the UFC to have "superstars" as you define them.

Mostly, you either follow the sport (or enough friends/family do) or the person gains "notoriety". E.g., Kobe Bryant and Mike Tyson for sex charges. Baseball players for steriods. Something that gets them on TV (or in papers) other than watching them play (or fight in this case).

AFAIK nobody in the UFC has ever been in trouble, they don't even report fight results in my paper (like they would for championship boxing matches)

But the sport seems to be gaining a lot of momentum. There will be superstars, whether through a movie role (like The Rock of wrestling) or something else.

I voted in your pole b4 reading, my "yes" vote shouldn't count as I follow UFC and can name a bunch of the fighters.

You know they advertise the fights on other cable channels. Some people may know who they are without following.

He got pounded 3:16 into the first round. I think coming off some brutal injuries and fighting someone like Silva before getting back into the groove was a poor situation for Franklin. I can't wait for a rematch.

Stephen Bonnar got busted after his last fight for taking horse steroids so bad that we are not even allowed to eat the meat that ate the meat that took the steroids. Nobody cared except the boxing commision and Bonnar.

Franklin is too over rated.
Poster boy for UFC finally got exposed, i mean look at his fight at UFC50 against Jorge rivera.
He got his ass handed to him and got that lucky armbar at the end, his other victories were against nobody impressive.
I mean Louiseau isnt anything impressive, hell i think Mike swick could probably beat Ace witha first round tko

Another conspiracy is that Dana white set Ace up since his contract is coming to an end.
Silva is no joke especially for someone coming off a serious injury as franklin did, Silvas footwork simply dominated Franklins.
Maybe ace doesnt want to fight anymore and threw the fight as well, since he didnt look like his normal self that night.
Well what a waste of 40 bones but i tell you one thing.
I won a shitload of money off silva and marrero.

Most people could name:

Royce Gracie (but might not recognize the name b/c it's pronounced "Hoyce")
Ken Shamrock (likely from WWE)
Matt Hughes
Tito Ortiz

I would like to see a rematch, Franklin is one tough cookie. He proved in his fight against Louiseau that he wasn't going to stop even due to broken bones. There is no doubt that Silva is one bad dude, but I think had Franklin came back, had an easier fight (even though he said he didn't want one) got back into the groove, regained some confidence in his broken hand, he would have been much more effective. Taking that long off, then hopping right back in and facing someone extremely tough isn't a good situation for even the best fighter out there.

The athletic commison is going to fine him. He will have to pay that fine before he fights again. However, based on his performance in his last few fights, I doubt he will fight again anyways.
