It will take a miracle for any other game to get GOTY this year.

The videos you see on the net don't do it justice at 30fps - the game runs a rock solid 60fps, making an already beautiful game just jaw-dropping.

The control is super tight, the camera isnt a problem, and if it wasnt for the crowd gathering around waiting for their chance, I'd probably still be there playing.

so did they like unlock the power of the wii and its putting out super awesome bioshock graphics now or are you just really really impressed for some other reason?

It shouldnt be surprising that the Nintendo devs probably know how best to utilize the Wii that anyone else. Its a combination of great art design, experienced coding, and the time taken to actually make something decent and not just vomit out another port.

See, the thing is, a game can look great without the power of the 360 or PS3. It's all about how you use what you have. Super Paper Mario looked fantastic, and it's almost entirely 2D. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is one of the best looking games ever, and it's a 2D SNES game.

I guess I have to specify game of the year graphics wise. So while yes, a game can look great without high definition high end antialiased lighting shading etc..., in consideration of a GOTY award, it would probably help its chances. Im sure it looks great for a mario game, but I'm gonna have to give the other games the nod when it comes to GOTY graphics. Do you disagree?

While graphics are nice I think presentation is more important to GOTY. TF2 is a good looking game with a great presentation. Graphically UT3 is better looking but lacks the style and personality of TF2. I wasn't very impressed with UT3 myself it was pretty looking and was fun, but there was too much detail to the point where it sort of distracted from the gameplay. It was almost like they decided everything in the game should be made out of as many small pieces as possible. Granted that's sort of the UT look but it was way overboard in my opinion.

Anyway back on topic, yes Mario isn't the prettiest game around but a game should look great for what it is and not what other games are.

I'll certainly agree that there are plenty of other games with more realistic graphics. "Better" is quite a bit more subjective, and has nothing to do with resolutiohn etc. One could make an argument that it has the best graphics OTY - I'm not saying that. I am saying that as of right now, its looking like game of the year.

As much as I love TF2, its not that much more than a reskin in most ways. I'd give it to portal before I gave it to TF2, for sheer originality and story.

I guess I'll have to find a demo and play it myself. Sunshine was such an utter disappointment that I'm having a hard time getting excited for Galaxy. I find that most Nintendo games these days just bore me and are largely overrated. Even other games that people have mentioned in this thread. For example, Super Paper Mario.

I was completely enjoying the game at the start... being able to switch from 2D to 3D was fun and made for some interesting puzzles. But once the initial coolness factor wore off the game became frustratingly tedious. Too much running around the city area when I all I really wanted to do was play the levels. Then, even in the levels, I got tired of walking a couple of screens, switch 2D to 3D to look for hidden items, walk a couple of screens, switch from 2D to 3D again, walk a couple of screens, arrrrgh!!!! Excruciating.

I find this to be the case with nearly all Nintendo games these days. They have an initial novelty factor that makes then enjoyable at the beginning, but they quickly wear thin. So, yeah, I really want to enjoy Galaxy, but I just don't know at this point. I loved Mario 64, but that was so long ago at this point and Sunshine was so disappointing.

If you're going to judge a game purely on its visual appeal, of course I'd go with Bioshock. But you have to take context into account. Even if the Wii had the same graphical capabilities as the 360, I think Mario would look pretty much the same, but higher resolution. Mario is always going to have cartoonish graphics, and high resolutions don't do a whole lot for that. It's not a game that can or should be compared to Bioshock, because the level of detail that is in Bioshock doesn't really belong in Mario. Mario can still look fantastic - it's just in a different ballpark. Different goals, different end results.

I was disappointed with Super Paper Mario as well; I found the game overly tedious and boring. The first two Paper Mario games were much more interesting and captivating, although they were really of a different genre.
