LOL Birth control (the pill) has been the best acne med I have ever been on. Before that I was on tetracycline, prescription strength benzyl peroxide, and some other topical antibiotic plus any number of OTC treatments. Although, I somehow doubt you can get on the pill! 😀
Good luck!

I tried it all when I was a teenager. My acne was not BAD, but I did have it. I find too many chemicals just make the skin oily and make it worse. I ended up just trying to get my face skin very dry, and zits would literally flake off with the flick of a finger. Rubing Alcohol FTW. All these other products are nothing but companies trying to make tons of cash. Most don't work. I have one product I still actually use to remove the occasional zit that decides to come up, but it only works because it dries out the spot faster then rubbing alcohol does.

Another thing with using all sorts of products is the zits become immune to it. You don't want to become dependant of a product.

No, but two doctors I went to offered to prescribe me something without being asked when I was there for other reasons. One was a dermatologist, so I could understand that, but when the doc giving me my routine physical did it, I realized that yes, it really was that bad. 😀

My roommate says the same thing. A perk of being a girl I guess. 😛

I got prescribed like three things. Tetracycline pill, Adapalene (Differin) cream/gel, and Sulfacetamide wash (Plexion). So, hopefully when I get the shit it'll clear up after a few months...

The reason I am doing it by mail is because then I don't have to pay. If I do it at the pharmacy I have to pay like 25%.

I've tried several medications, both topical and oral. I started using the topical ones about 3 years ago, and I still use them. I think the names are Differin and Claron. I also took a pill for a while which was called Doryx.

The pill worked really well, but I didn't really feel comfortable taking a broad-spectrum antibiotic for long periods of time.

That's actually what my dermatologist prescribed, too. I think I got the generic version of your pill, Doxycycline, and also Differin. I've been using it to try and get rid of this one scar on my nose but it hasnt helped much. The pill seemed to work well but I was also concerned about taking it; also my prescription ran out about a month ago and I haven't bothered to get more :hmm:

I used Adapalene/Differin, Tetracycline, and Clean & Clear when I was a teen. It helped (I was a hamburger face in 9th grade, it subsided to just pimply by junior year), but not super noticeably. Having braces 10-12th grade didn't help my self-esteem either. But really, it should clear up by the time you're 20. At around 19 or 19-1/2 my acne was gone except for an occasional pimple and my beard was coming in nicely - it'll clear itself up.

The only thing that ever helped is age. I still get a few pimples now and then, but nowhere as much as before. I think greasy foods does contribute to acne even though research says the opposite.

Interesting... I think I'll stick with the research then... >_> Considering, you know, research is usually peer-reviewed and trusted. >_>

But it wouldn't hurt to improve my diet anyway... but I need to gain weight still... (like 50lbs since I am at 116lbs for 5'9")

Unless you only get the occasional pimple, those creams like clearasil will do nothing. I took accutane when I turned 18, and it started to wear off about two years later. My acne didnt come back as bad, but it was still worse than I would have liked. Rather than going through the hell that was accutane, I searched for something else. It turns out that prior to accutane, one of the best solutions was high doses of Vitamin A. In fact, accutane is a derivative of Vitamin A. I started taking 400% of my daily value of Vitamin A, and within weeks I was once again acne free. Even at this percent studies show that it has no adverse side effects. Soon I found an even better product, called Akne Zyme, probably the best nonprescription product on the market for acne management. A daily dose contains 200% of your daily dose of vitamin A in addition to several other vitamins for skin health. It works extremely well without any of the side effects of accutane. While I don't know if it would work well on extreme acne, it sure does a good job on mild to somewhat severe acne.

Ever go to a dermatologist and get prescribed some stuff? If so, what did yah take?

I went last Thursday and they prescribed me some stuff.. Just have to wait for it to come in the mail... Aaahhh decent health insurance and meds-by-mail ftw. 😀

Just wonderin'!

I'm currently on Soledyn (minocycline), Ziana (topical clindamycin and tretinoin), and a benzoyl peroxide cleanser.

So far, so good. Cleared up my folliculitis real nice and is doing a pretty decent job on my acne (I'm 28).

my mom is a firm believer that there's a pill out there to fix any and every problem, so when my acne got bad in high school, I got shipped off to the dermatologist. I was put on a wide variety of medications before my dermatologist finally put me on accutane when I was 15.

it sucked... my lips were insanely dry/cracked 24/7 (it was painful to smile or laugh even, which I guess isn't so bad considering that the acutane also made me depressed) and I had frequent bloody noses. it got so bad that my guidance councilor actually pulled me out of class once to see if I was on drugs or something.

it made my acne a lot better but didn't 100% clear it up. in retrospect, I don't think any of it was really necessary... no one ever explained to me that it's possible to wash your face too much and make your acne even worse, which is likely what I was doing.

my acne didn't really go away until my late 20's when I lost a ton of weight and started drinking more water. I still get the occasional pimple, but not often and they're always pretty small.

i did accutane, nothing else worked

its been two years and i get the odd zit everynow and then

the dryness gets pretty terrible in the winter,
