I'm guessing your ISP is down...even if all lights are on the modem you could still have an ISP outage. Just a guess. Tell your wife to bypass the Gizmo and connect the modem up to the comp and see if she can get online.

She doesn't know how to do that since I have all the wires tucked away and hidden. But I've had this issue before, and when I bypass the gizmo, I have internet access right away. I think the gizmo is causing the problem.

Can you come to my house and do this for me...:D I've got the biggest rats nest of wires...

No sorry... it took quite a bit of nagging from my wife to get me to do this. Also took some wire-pulling from my 1 year old son.

Darn, I was gonna ask the same thing.

By the sound of it though, you're having ISP issues. I've never removed my gizmo (until this weekend) from my setup in the year I've had it, and have never had it block my internet access.

How'd you get your 1 year old son to pull wires for you? Can he fit 'tween the walls? I had to hire an electrician. ;)

Before I got everything organized, my son loved to go monkey with the wires. One time he wandered in there and unplugged the mouse and pulled it off the desk. He came wandering out of the room swinging the cord and laughing. It was hilarious!

Back to my Gizmo issue: When I got home from work, I just unplugged the gizmo and plugged it right back in. After about 30 seconds it was up and running. So it doesn't seem like that would have been caused by an ISP outage. It seems more like a gizmo issue. OR, the other possibility is that there was an ISP outage, and the gizmo is unable to recover from that on its own. Either way, it's not good.

Also, another unrelated question: I picked up a small APC UPS just to power my gizmo, cable modem, and cordless phone, so we would keep phone service for a few hours in the event of a power outage. I think a lot of other people have done the same. Well, the power went out last night, and the UPS did it's job by keeping things powered... the problem is that it beeped LOUDLY every minute or so, to indicate the power outage. That pretty much makes it unusable (we had to turn it off to sleep). Do most UPS units do this? If so, it sort of makes them not viable for this kind of use.

I have an APC UPS too for the exact same reason. It did it's job the one time the power went out, but yeah, that beeping was friggin annoying (especially since the power went out at 5am...it woke me thinking it was the smoke detector or something).

Excellent! How hard was it to set it up through your home wiring like that?

Here's a nice document on how to do it, complete with photos: Text

i'm confused....so you disconnect the jacks in the NIU outside. then what? do you just plug the gizmo into the wall? or does the gizmo get connected to the NIU?

Just plug the gizmo into the wall outlet inside. It will then feed all the other phone outlets. Just make sure you no longer have a dial tone on the line after disconnecting at the NIU and before plugging in the gizmo.

Project86: I have the same issue with the gizmo needing to be bounced. The VOIP light is on but I don't get a dial tone. Mine is on a UPS as well. And yeah, it's pretty annoying when the power goes off and the UPS starts howling. I've got 3 UPS's. Two for my PC's and cablemodem, router, and gizmo. The other for my home theater setup. Wish I could silence them but it's worth it to have them protected.

I got home from work and tried to make a call - once again no dial tone. I bounced my gizmo and all I got is a 'Power' and 'WAN' light. I called SunRocket support and once again there was a communication problem (yay to outsourcing! :disgust: ). I got tired of repeating myself and asking him to repeat himself and got put on hold again. Why would I be put on hold in the middle of a tech support call? Anyway, I decided to cancel.

It just isn't worth it. I never expected perfection from the service but even my low expectations were way out of reach here. IMO the service isn't worth $200/year with 2 free sets of phones thrown in. The truth is I wouldn't want it if it was free. It's too unreliable and the (clueless) tech support and (unresponsive) customer service are worthless to solve problems.

Good luck to those who want to give it a try. If it works for you it's a great deal. Unfortunately, I don't have the time or patience to troubleshoot any further. I'm out...

EDIT: FWIW, here's some tests run to check my connection...

BroadbandReports speed test results (Miami):
dslreports.com speed test result on 2006-04-21 18:31:50 EST:
9232 / 947
Your download speed : 9232 kbps or 1154 KB/sec.
That is 110.7% better than an average user on rr.com
Your upload speed : 947 kbps or 118.3 KB/sec.
That is 115.2% better than an average user on rr.com

tracert to Sunrocket = 14 hops and largest delay was 87ms then 42ms.

TestYourVOIP (Boston) was 4.4 in each. No packet loss in either.

Robor, I think it's the avatar.
See, with my avatar, "they" know that they don't dare screw with me.
Did you and George ever connect? If he can't make it work, you might derive some satisfaction from taking the Gizmo out in the woods and using it for target practice with your 600 Nitro Express! :D:D:D
Overall, however, a complete bummer.

i'm also very worried about SR's support, for any problems in the future. it's been working since my last post, so that's good. but their support was a nightmare. if vonage is just as good, i might be willing to pay ~$5 more per month for reliable support. does anyone have experiences w/ them?

That's not exactly what my problem is. I have the 4 lower lights on, but the VOIP light is not. I also can't get thru to internet. It's like all info is going thru the gizmo, and for some reason it won't let data pass thru sometimes. Or maybe, like some people have suggested, the ISP goes out for a short time. But shouldn't the gizmo be able to recover from that?

As far as the UPS beeping... I don't see the point in even having one if it will be so annoying that I'll have to turn it off. I might as well just use a decent surge protector instead. I don't suppose there is any possible way to turn off the beeps? I'll look into that but I doubt it.

find the speaker and disconnect it?

disclaimer: I have no idea if that's a good/safe idea.... but I'd probably look at that, if it were me

If you find Vonnage for "$5/mo" more than S/R, I'm interested for real.

All of my UPSs have a disable button/switch for the noisemaker.
It's good to be notified but then it's good to be able to turn the beeper off.

Hehehe... I used to go by the 'Tech' avatar but put it to the 'Crying' one after the tsunami in Asia. I thought about changing it back but considering the FU situation the world is in I thought it appropriate so I left it.

No, George and I didn't connect and honestly that's cool. It's not his job to troubleshoot the problems with Sunrocket. It's SunRocket support and they've been just above non-existant for me. I appreciate George's offer but my service this time around has been even worse than the last and I've got 2x the download and 3x the upload connection speed and ping tests show I am online while SunRocket craps out.

I'm not saying SunRocket sucks for everyone but for me it did and if someone asked me about it I'd say give it a try. Worst case you're out some time and recoup some of if with the free phones.

I'm just pissed 'cause now I don't know where to go next. I'm thinking back to POTS... :-/

FYI -- Vonage does not pass outbout CallerID names. Oh, and sometimes they forget to pass your outbound Caller#. In the end you get a lot of your friends thinking you're a spammer and get blocked. That's the main reason I left Vonage. ;)

Not not quite the level of seriousness as your S/R experiences.

Besides, if you are on the state and federal don't call list(s)...:D:D:D

I'm probably the wrong one to talk to here because I'm going to trash SunRocket as far as any technical issue but I'll try and be fair... Have you had 'net connectivity issues before installing the gizmo? If not then it's suspect.

As far as UPS vs surge protector that's apples/oranges. I wouldn't put a system I cared about behind a 'power strip'. I've seen too many parts fail behind them in brown outs or power surges. If I care about an electronic piece of hardware it's sitting in an APC UPS now (with warranty). :)

Can somoeone point me to instruction on how to set up the gizmo and still be able to have ports like TCP 3662 open for download?

I've the gizmo b4 the Buffallo WRG52 and my download software shows "unreachable" and when i put the gizmo after the router the voip light doesn't work, hence phone line is not working.

Called SR but to no avail thus far...I couldn't find the link i think i've somewhere to a SR forum, anyone has it?

I think you should be able to connect to your gizmo with a browser pointed to it's IP via the LAN port. IIRC the gizmo is 192.168.251.1 - username is admin and password is welcome. I don't remember if you can map ports though. If you're going cable modem > gizmo > router > internal LAn the easy way would be just drop your router in the DMZ of the gizmo. That way it shouldn't block anything.

True, but it's still annoying. I found myself using my cell to call friends and family because I was getting blocked or going to voicemail when my number showed 'Out of area' or 'Unknown'.

Yeah, I've got all of my numbers on the block lists. Of course, the best protection is to not give your number out to anyone who isn't a friend/family. I still use my previous phone number for all the places that require a phone number. I appologize to those poor people who have it now... :p ;)
