You're probably right. I very much doubt we get any meaningful numbers as far as performance is concerned. What would be nice is to at least get a preview of the SKU lineup.

My circa ~2011 i5 2500K build is starting to have problems. I'm getting random lock ups and freezes, red and blue screens of death. Could be the mobo, could be the memory, could be the PSU (doubtful, quality Seasonic unit), could be something else. Regardless, its time for me to build a new rig seeing as I refuse to spend over $400 for an 8-core processor, I'm really hoping AMD delivers with Zen and SOON!

Pentiums with HTT and a k model i3,that's about as much pressure as intel felt from ZEN.

It's not like the biggest cpu maker in the world doesn't have the best inside into the possibilities and potential for what AMD might be able to make,they don't have to wait for ZEN to release they already have the best and the worst case scenarios figured out long ago.

Agree with the latter but not the former.

The chance Zen will come anywhere near Intel 2017 is miniscule. It would need an absolute miracle. Opteron style.

But there's certainly a much bigger chance that Zen will surprise them with something(s).

My prediction is as follows:
Any good performance and you'll definitely see worthy leaks in December. If not, it's nothing more than the past 6 years in terms of competitiveness. Hit 1, Miss 6.

There are millions of people buy today because they dont know about what is coming next week or month or they simple dont care and they want to get something today.

Only people like us wait for 2-3 or 6 months for the next new arch and we are the minority.

What if Zen 8 core costs more than $400?

Very very very small minority. Most people who buy gaming computers, or even people who build their own, simply don't care.

Intel does feel pressure. The ARMy has been yelling for years that they're coming for their server share and AMD has also been saying since mid 2014 that it's doing an all new CPU uarch for high performance markets.

Look deep in Intel's financials, they have boosted their R&D by a ton over the last few years. There is only one tech company in the world that spends more on R&D.

And, most importantly, Intel needs to deliver better products so that people (especially data center operators) upgrade.

The notion that Intel is simply "holding back" is not based in reality. What you will see though is Intel being more aggressive in the SKUs that they put out. Like a hyperthreaded Pentium.

Note that CPU cores and other fundamental IP are shared among all groups, so there haven't been cuts in the core tech.

I'm thinking there will be 4 models - a 8 core Black Edition, another 8 core, a 6 core and a 4 core. The 8 BE model will be the only one available initially and lets say 600-700 bucks. Maybe they will throw in a high end cooler to go with it if Zen can overclock at all.

I am hoping they will all be unlocked like the FX was. There will probably be 2 8c/8t parts. The higher clocked/binned one and the regular one.

I still feel their increase in process tech is too little. They're saying "nah, Moore's Law's too difficult for us, we'll chill here at 3 yrs per node". TSMC has upped its pace, so being stuck on the same thing for such a long time is uncompetitive.

Exactly. The tier levels need to cycle down now. Lets see Intel's latest gen unlocked 6c/12 for $300.

Why would a company react to an unreleased product when they can drop prices instantly if a threat arises? Even if they knew Zen was in reality very strong they would want to maximize profit margins while they can.

The very first 8c product they release might cost more, but I expect an unlocked 8 core Zen SKU released later in Q1 that is at or sub $400.
