Summer = hot. Anyone use these exterior Snap Shades on their windows?

I saw some of these kits at costco and they seem pretty interesting. Cut to size, then attach to your windows for a temporary shade that can be taken down in the winter. I have a big 2 story window that I was going to go with a motorized external shade for, but this would be way cheaper and allow me to buy some for the windows as well. Was just wondering if anyone had some first hand experience.

I like trees. They look good, and keep the house cool. Add some ceiling fans, and you can save a ton on AC.

Interesting, I like how they install in front of the window as to work much better than tints..

I like to prance around naked in front of those windows. All the neighbors love me. :p

I currently only walk back and forth naked, I'll try to add some prance to my step. There is an empty field behind the back wall for about 50 yards, then a fire station. I'm sure they'd appreciate it though.

Trees take too long to grow, especially to the 20+ feet I need them to shade those windows and I'm always apprehensive about any damage their roots can cause.

BUTCH1: I liked that too. I was thinking about installing tints, but then I'd lose out in the winter time of any possible heating affects. These supposedly block more heat as well. This way, I'm up on the ladder twice a year. Putting them up in the spring and taking down in the fall.

Oh well, I'm off to take some measurements of my windows.

Yea but it's a pretty simple install, watch the vid on the OP's linked page, once the install is done you will be able to place them or take them down in minutes..

I bet it wouldn't be hard to build something similar, and much cheaper.

Probably. I would just use magnets out of hard drives, or if you can find a place that actually sells those. Then the rest is just some kind of weatherproof material. Measure, cut, glue the magnets on both the house and the material, done. Maybe a 1 day job with a couple hundred bucks of materials at very most.

Shades dont do shit for the humidity. I dont mind dry 90+ degree heat. Humidity is what kills me.

Thermostat in my room says 27 C (that's 81 F you americana) right now. FML. I go ADD and just plain drunk when it gets this hot. And my 6850 won't shut up even when idling.

I wonder what kind of screen material it is. I'll have to give it a closer inspection next time I go to costco. Maybe on Tuesday. Its probably a madhouse there this whole weekend.

Yep.

In other news, if you don't have trees over your windows and want some protection from the sun in the next 15 years this product looks neat.

Trees start making a difference the minute you put them in the ground, and get better with time. While the windows are the main heater, the walls suck up a lot of heat also, and any shade you can put on any part of the house makes a difference.

Nope. White wooden blinds to reflect most of the sun, and black blackout drapes to block the rest.

The entry level kit is only $129, now I'm all in favor of homebrew ideas but it's gonna be hard to beat that price and their material might be hard to find if only they make it..

Problem is the black drapes will absorb energy at the window but because they are inside they will emit the energy into the room..

It's about $70 a window. That's a little expensive imo, especially if you have a bunch of windows. It would look stupid doing a partial job, so it's all or nothing. I'd be interested in seeing the material myself. I don't need it(lots of trees :^D), but I know someone who was talking about making shades for the windows, and this looks like a good system. It's too expensive for what my friend wanted, but if I could adapt the idea it might work.

Another thing that works is foil paper on the inside! Not only does it reflect the sun rays out, but it keeps the govment and terrists out too. :D

Ummm, wrong.
Like I said, I have white blinds. They are facing the sun. They get MOST of the light, by reflection.

The black curtains get the leftover light before it enters my eyes.

Guess it depends on what size windows, it comes with a '10X'6 roll, that would get at least 3 of mine done. I'll have to look around to see if that material they use is a proprietary one..

As long as they don't get direct sunlight then your good, I drive a black car and I regret buying that color now..

I have some mirror window film installed on a bunch of my windows. (gila brand sold at lowes). Pain in the butt to put on, but works very nicely, and fairly cheap too.

I had one too and I know what you mean. My problem is black bodies seem to be the only ones that have non-black interiors. And a black interior will cook you in the sunlight too.
