not buying it.

Well you know they have scientific evidence that he was Brown right. I mean he was Jewish you know. That should kinda give you a hint.

same. grade school friend hung himself this past january with a bed sheet from a god damn ceiling fan. it'll eat at me the rest of my life knowing i was sitting having a beer with him a few hours before he did it and never picked up one single vibe.

Forget it, people are not an open book. It has nothing to do with you.

He was the son of God, there is no scientific proof.

Yea but imagine if he was Black. Like drop a Black dude in the middle of a bunch of whities. NO way they gonna worship him. Drop a white dude in the middle of Japan, no one people gonna think he's son of God.

They were Jews. He was a Jew. He wasn't an Alien like Supreme Commander Thor.

Nihilism is such a pointless philosophy (mind the pun). Who cares if life has intrinsic value or meaning? We can derive meaning from our relationships. Life's meaning is emergent, just like a snow flake has no intrinsic structure if you only look at it as a collection of water molecules, beauty emerges from the structure not of individual molecules but of their relationship to one another. So is life.

I feel bad that someone of obvious intellect has ended his life, nihilism is a terrible thing.

That's a good thought and would be the end of discussion if people were immortal.

But people worry about what that means about death. If life interactions are the ultimate meaning, then death is the end of it all. Since all people die, is there a point if life is intrinsically meaningless?

Logically, probably not because whether you die today or 100 years from now, the "result" is the same.

^this

though a goal of money/power leading to freedom/fun is worth sticking around, at least for me. but I stick by a "don't really give a shit" motto at the core, since none of it really matters. I suppose leaving some kind of legacy is another goal, though it ALL will end sometime, so thats debatable. If I'm ever in a position where I gotta clean shit for a living, or something like that, no fucking way. I don't know how people can do certain things in life. Education really is the difference I guess. The guy cleaning toilets probably doesn't think about this shit

According to the boston globe article, a separate note to his mom asked her to maintain a website he made to distribute the book and she was going to do so. Bastards didn't link to it though :(

I found it: http://www.suicidenote.info/

Enjoy!

You know what a true nihilist would have done? A true nihilist, after completing the last page of their 1900 page opus on the meaningless of life, would have thrown the thing into the fire and forgotten the whole thing. That.... would have taken balls.

So true, why bother to evangelize nihilism. I just read about 20 pages of it. When I first started reading the lobe story I thought of a scenario where what if the work was so compelling that thousands or millions of people read it and committed suicide.

You know that's actually a damn good point. A nihilist certainly wouldn't ask a family member to keep their website up and running after their death.

This is how I, and presumably most "well-adjusted" people will respond. Of course no life has a meaning other than the one we create for it. But, playing Devil's Advocate here, this line of logic means that the opposite viewpoint is just as valid. If we are to create or derive the meaning of our own lives, then we should ultimately be able to decide that there is no meaning. I've not studied much Nihilism or Absurdism, but understand the basic underlying ideas. If we can't find a point to our lives, why continue to live them in search of this elusive, intangible, thing?

I love being alive, even though I've dealt with my share of depression and feelings of complete worthlessness and aloneness. I would never want to kill myself. But, disconnecting from emotions for a bit, it's not really that illogical to decide to simply end yourself if you decide you don't need to exist anymore. If an obviously intelligent, insightful man gets to be 35 years of age, it's safe to assume he's done a fair bit of searching and thinking. Maybe he's decided that there's no point to his life. Not an emo "my life is not worth living" kind of thing, but more of a decision of efficiency. He's going to die eventually, he knows there's no ultimate goal in life, then why not just do it himself? I'm an empath with an over active imagination, and I often wonder what my life will be like when I'm 70. What if I never marry, or I marry and my wife dies. Will I just sit and spend every day waiting for death to come? Of course the answer most people will give is, no, go out and live your life. But that brings us back to square one. This probably only makes a small bit of sense. I guess what I'm saying is that when I use my heart, I feel for this guy, and his family, and anyone who ever gets to the point of suicide. I know there's plenty of life to live for. But my logical side understands the nihilist rationale.
