Suggestions on what to do? Gf's Iphone on Verizon got stolen --- UPDATE - Returned

My Gf's Verizon iPhone (2 months old) got stolen yesterday afternoon. We tracked it down with mobile me, sent several messages to the unit.

For over 2 hours we sent messages to the phone. We even drove by the area (in a shady area of Van Nuys) and walked around while I was calling the phone. We couldnt hear it ringing (or beeping when you send the alert message)
and finally we ended up wiping the phone remotely and posting a lost iphone flyer in the area.

Fact is we probably wont get the phone back. Damn illegals.

So we went to Verizon, they REFUSED to even talk to us properly about the case. They were like 'you need to buy the phone at full retail'. She didnt have insurance, cause in the past when asurion provided phone insurance they really didnt do much and old non-smart phones didnt cost that much. Verizon wants us to pay 650 for a new phone. Their manager was super rude, wasnt willing to listen. What a way to treat a long time customer.

We want to try and get a new updated contract on the account. The phone is 2 months old, it got stolen. She has been a loyal verizon user for the last 9 years. This is the first time like this happened.

She's lost a lot more than a phone, lots of pictures, contacts, memories etc etc.

Any suggestions. I am looking on CL for a used iphone, but so far most of them are 'bad esn' (aka stolen/lost phones)

She just told me that the sales guy never explained the insurance other than 'do you want cellphone insurance'. In sufficient training for the sales folks. They should have spent 2 minutes explaining why they may want to consider the insurance and what its difference is between that and apple warranty. Perhaps they will get more ROI and more 'upselling' points.

idiots!

UPDATE: Phone was returned today. She bought a phone from BBY yesterday and today the guy who stole it returned it. Her dad went to pick it up with LAPD in tow. Her dad works in LEO. It was the 'parents' that returned the unit.

You have 3 options:
1. Buy a new iPhone at full price.
2. Buy a cheaper phone.
3. Switch to AT&T and pay $200 for an iPhone and your Verizon ETF. Probably cheaper than $650.

Tell us more about the memories she has with a 2 month old phone. Are they all good, or are there also some sad memories that go with it. If there are some sad memories that might devalue the phone a bit.

Not to be a dick but... your GF lost her phone and you're pissed with Verizon because they won't eat some of the cost? Take some responsibility.

Your fault for not getting it. Time for your girlfriend to cough up $600 bro. She lost it, she takes responsibility.

For the longest time, you couldn't get insurance from your provider for an iPhone. At least, AT&T wouldn't offer Assurion until VERY recently.

i have to concur. where does this sense of entitlement come from? if anything, how about you go to Apple and not Verizon and demand a new phone from them?

What makes you so sure that someone in Van Nuys has the phone? How do you know if it isn't dropped in the bushes or a ditch.

If you call it and you get voicemail after 1 or 2 rings then it's turned off or no reception.

lol?

If that ever worked, I'd go to Verizon pretending to lose my phone, get a new phone and sell it for instant $600 profit.

WTF is wrong with you?

Cmon you knew the risks. I have no insurance on my Thunderbolt, if I lose it I know the consequences. Expecting Verizon to give me a new one for discount price a couple months into a 2 year contract would be dreaming.
