Suggestions for someone who is new to coffee.

My school has a Starbucks, and today I decided to try a cappuccino. It tasted terrible. All I can think of is "burnt water".

Do people really drink this stuff? Is there another kind I should try?

yea try making your own

buy coffee pot of choice
buy whole beans, or grind them yourself (in store/home)
profit

Coffee like tobacco and alcohol is definately an aquired taste. I doubt anyone really likes it the first time they try it.

Really? Starbucks uses way too much milk in their lattes and cappuccinos. Their regular coffee tastes burnt, but not their espresso drinks. You sound like a nancyboy.

eh, ive tried a lot of coffee variations (starbucks, "gourmet" coffee shops, time consuming home processes, etc) and have come around to using a home drip machine with dunkin donuts grounds from the grocery store. simple, fast and tasty.

The problem is that you tried perhaps the worst type of coffee to start. Starbucks is horrible IMO, and cappuccino is an acquired taste.

Try a cup of coffee at a local restaurant. It'll still probably taste like burnt water...but it SHOULD be considerably better than anything at Starbucks.

I like Starbucks coffee, but then I like most coffee. As long as it isn't weak as dishwater, or sitting on a heater for hours, it's all good. Men drink coffee, others don't. Maybe it isn't for you ;^)

do you like coffee AT ALL? or are you a complete n00b?

Start with regular coffee, not an expresso drink.

Like beer and wine, there are a zillion different types of coffee. You will probably need to try a bunch to find something you like. I can't stand weak coffee (Dunkin's, anything out of a Kuerig). I used to hate starbucks until I discovered that the one up my way has a Clover (see link below). Pick your beans, wait a few minutes, and prepare to taste a coffee flavored liquid orgasm. Seriosly, that coffee machine brings out flavors that I have never tasted in coffee made via any other system.

Drink good coffee. I had been drinking milk/sugar coffee until a friend had me try some of the coffee he brewed. WOW! I will never go back to milk and sugar unless the coffee sucks.

I typically drink either Peet's or Alpen Sierra. Check out West Coast Roasting. Nate roasts some awesome beans!

Sounds like the Starbucks at your school is staffed by tards if they can't properly make a cappuccino.

You tried an espresso drink with very high coffee content...

If you want something tasty, you should go with a Hazelnut or Vanilla flavored Iced Coffee with skim milk and sugar.

Even fatter sweeter and tastier are Iced Lattes.

Been drinking all kinds of coffee for years and I can't stand black coffee.

It's just too bitter.

Its only bitter if its burnt, either by the roaster or by sitting on the warmer too long.

Fact, coffee sitting on a warmer will burn in under 10 minutes.

I think this is actually correct. There were two guys running the store, and they both seemed pretty dumb. One of them traded positions for the cash register, and he told the other guy, "You know how to make drinks, right?"

The dude sounded oblivious. "Uhh. Yeah. I totally can!" and then walked over to the machine and dropped a tray or something, it was pretty loud. Meanwhile, the cashier was like, "Crap, how do I ring up one of those sticky rolls? I don't have the sheet thing..."

Start with a mocha frap. It's like 99% Frosty and 1% coffee. Work your way up from there. 🙂

Okay, awesome. This is the kind of response I was looking for. 😀

Note taken. Thanks.

I don't plan on buying a coffee machine anytime soon, let alone actually drinking coffee on a regular basis. But thought I'd like to try. I like the "concept" of coffee but admittedly I've never really took the opportunity to adapt to the taste. I'll hold off on these drinks that are more advanced, as you say, and try something sweeter.

I'd also recommend starting out with some baristas who actually know WTF they're doing
