Ok I bought my first PC of my own a few months back because I didn't have money to build one yet. I am upgrading it so that I can make better use out of it until next summer when I can build one. So please make suggestions about the upgrades I am picking.

Corsair ValueSelect 1GB (2x512) Ram - Already Purchased
BenQ DW-1655 DVD DL/LS Burner - Already Purchased

CPU:
Currently: Sempron 3000+
Upgrading: X2 3800+ (After Price Drop)

HDD:
Seagate 250GB Barracuda

Video Card:
Currently: Onboard
Upgrading: Sapphire X1800XT

Monitor:
ViewSonic VA1912wb (2)

These will all be bought seperately except the monitors. Basically I will buy them when the money comes.

PSU:
Enermax Liberty

Ambermime M made by AsusTek, this PC is storebought so it is a custom made mobo I believe. There is a Mobo price drop? Could you give me a link to a topic on AT that gives some details on it. Because if there is then I might as well upgrade that and the case and have a new PC.

My concern is that you most likely have a socket 754 board and you are looking to get a socket 939 processor.

Ah ok, good to know you got a 939 board and not a 754.

When I said price drop I was referring the CPU price drop. so nevermind about that.

Next question, what power supply do you have?

bestec ATX-250-12Z Stock that came with system. It probably would be best to upgrade this too since it is a $20 PSU

YES, definitely. I doubt that will even run a 7900GT with a 3800+. Look into the Seasonic S12 or possibly a fsp group or a Enermax liberty. All are good.

Ok Updated, How are the monitors and video card? Are they good for the price or could I get better for the price?

I don't have any SATA Connectors. So will I need a SATA PCI Controller? If so suggestions?

no SATA connectors on such a new board. Now that is a shame. I guess then keep the one you got there, the SATA is not worth buying a add on card IMO.

Well I am pretty sure there are no SATA connectors. Is there a way to check in CPU-Z?

right click on my computer, properties, go to device manager, select IDE ATA/ATAPI devices. Is a SATA controller listed?

no just convenience and you would get the newer drive for the same price.

I would be a bit weary about dropping in a high-end CPU into an OEM board like that. I would suggest you make the move to a new AM2 board, for the sake of safety/stability and upgradeability.

You should also consider a better case; most OEM boxes are very unfriendly to work in and often have poor airflow designs, especially for hotter running hardware.

I would take the Seasonic S12 over the Liberty, also look into Enhance.

is the company that made the computer called Ambermime M with a asus m/b? i type in Ambermime in google and don't get anything. i know a lot of small computer stores will just put regular boards into the machines. can you take off the side of the case to actually see the m/b? are you sure the m/b will even recognize a x2 cpu?

that is a good card for the $$$, i picked one up a couple of weeks ago, been real happy with it. it does draw some power and does put off some heat, glad the hsf gets the heat out of the case.

no probs, the issues is is whether or not the m/b will see the cpu. i can't find anything on the board stating what cpus is supports....according to compaq you are running the latest bios, but the bios explanation doesn't say anything about cpus

Hang on I will get in a tech support chat with compaq real quick and see. I doubt it helps though, they will probably just tell me to buy a new one or send it to them to upgrade.
