Shotgun is good for home protection, but is not something you can keep at the ready all the time.

holy ****.
Thats my nightmare.
That dirtbag deserves two to the chest and one in the face. Maybe he'll come back.. but I bet you were too much trouble.

I dont think I'd be much of a match in a fight like you were it sounds.
I'm like 5'8" and 185lbs., pretty trim (no gut overhang) and fairly stocky but I've been in fights with people over the years and I generally am no bad ass fighter (was almost knocked out in college after recieving about 6 blows to my head from someone who was 6'7", then wised up and tackled him and put his head in a stranglehold until i choked him unconcious).
Even if i was mr. physical intimidation I'd prefer to use a gun in a serious situation like a robbery.. college stuff is stupid.

This thread is absolutley full of information!*

*NOT USEFUL

Amazing that a forum that has enough problems with WOMEN has so much craptactular advice about *GASP* KILLLIN PEOPLE!

Without exaggeration, there's some terribly wrong information in this thread.

A: Automatic weapons are LEGAL. Their place in modern society is limited, since in 1934 all auto's were regulated by the government. Requirements to own are paying a $200 tax stamp and passing a background check + signature from local official. This is also dependent your state allows the ownership of machine guns. FYI: Silencers and SBR"s follow the above protocol.

Just an FYI on current prices

M16 registered reciever: $16,000
MP5 SEAR (not complete gun): $10,000
MP5 complete: $16,000
Uzi Registered Vector: $6000
MAC10: $3000

B: Shotguns WILL penetrate plenty of sheetrock. See: http://www.theboxotruth.com/3/

Note: It took 7 panels of sheetrock to stop buckshot. Not truly scientific, but just enough to get those saying that shotguns dont penetrate past walls to shut up.

C: Shotgun pattern. Who here has patterned 00 Buck at 21 feet? Hint: I have.

If you cant hit it with a pistol at 21 feet, you're not going to do much better with a 12 gauge. The pattern of 9 pellets has LITTLE TO NO SPREAD at 7 yards. I had one hole on paper.

D: There is no "one shot" caliber. Anyone who says otherwise is speaking out of their ass. The ability to incapacitate an attacker is based on SHUTTING DOWN THEIR CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM. Yes, someone actually said something right! Choice of caliber is secondary to shot placement. Think a 9mm wont stop an attacker? I suggest you learn how to perform a failure drill.

E: Guns that shoot underwater: Every gun will probably fire underwater at least once.

The exceptions are: Revolvers, double or O/U shotguns, and pump shotguns. These should fire underwater as many times as you want provided the gunpowder stays dry.

I have years of competitive shooting experience so I know what works and what does not. The simple fact of the matter is that when it comes to guns, you can ask 3 people and get 10 opinions, 50% of which are usually WRONG.

We had a revolution, a civil war relatively shortly later.. from our history would it really be that surprising?
I guess you like taking chances.. I dont.

Do you know who I am/where I work? I'm armed anytime I leave my home. But talking about defending the homeland from the Chinese? Are you fvcking nuts? If you want to do that, join the military...just hope they don't give you a psych eval.

No one said they want to do that? Hmmm... come on now.
You think China will never present a threat, and that an invasion couldnt happen? Get real!
I said I'd like to be ready for anything. Not waiting with anticipation to fight the chinese in the streets hand to hand LOL

I'm a bit late to the thread but I'll throw in my .02 cents.
Pistol. Shotguns (IMO) are too unweildy for close encounters, and thats what in house fighting is. Can you grapple and shoot an opponent with a shotgun? No chance. Can you grapple and shoot an opponent with a pistol? Yes, definately. Also, you can get the same extras for both (lasers and lights), and the fact you dont have to aim a shotgun is purely myth and smoke. Your looking at a spread pattenr of a few inches with in-house ranges. You still need to aim.

I'll take a pistol for in house work. 9mm or .45 for me, although in pratice theres little difference betwen the 9mm, 10mm, .40 and. 45 rounds as long as you use good ammo.

If you seel knowledge, this is the best advice I can give you, and the best advice you will recieve: Stop reading, leave ATOT, and take several gun courses, bringing up all your questions to the liscensed professional.

It's not anymore crazy than folks believing in a Soviet invasion on US soil in the 70's to mid 80's and guess what some of these folks work in all levels of law enforcement.

Yep. And denial is the best way to demilitarize or let your guard down. Thats exactly when a vicious enemy strikes, when a bunch of short-sighted pacifist attitudes take over.

You didnt seem hip to the idea of the shotgun, what woudl your recommendation be?

You disproved alot of previously said information, but I didnt gather exactly what you'd say would be recommended.

So far, I've decided to go with the official NRA recommendation, and I'm goign to look at everyones suggestions on individual shotguns.
Are you with this?

PhasmatisNox- I do intend to do that, but I've found alot of these people really DO know alot and are able to point me in teh right direction much faster than I could myself.
Of course my final decision is going to be affirmed by a licensed professional. I'm talking about something incredibly serious to me here.
But why not start here? We got some great guys with 50X my experience with guns, and I'd like to draw on them first to get me started.

I say use that one they have in CS, ive seen people jumping around and shooting it without a problem, and headshots are quite easy with it. Although your wife/girlfriend might be like "OmG N00b!1" if she catches you using it, same applies to the AWP, or so i hear.

"You didnt seem hip to the idea of the shotgun, what woudl your recommendation be?"

I never said that - I'm saying consider the options you have with your state/enviroment.

"So far, I've decided to go with the official NRA recommendation, and I'm goign to look at everyones suggestions on individual shotguns. Are you with this?"

I wasnt aware the NRA made a specific reccomendation on what people should defend themselves with. Where'd you find this?

Priceless advice:

Buy something you're comfortable with it and practice like hell with it. I'm not kidding. Whether it be shotgun, rifle or pistol - all are useless if you dont know how to use them.

Items to consider: availability of range time, cost of ammo, and convenience/portability.

Some ranges lack the infrastructure to support rifle/shotgun fire when that may be your weapon of choice.

Understand the potential enviroment you are in and what you are comfortable with. Man's got to know his limitations.

Ruger Security Six. 357 Mag, Pachmyr grips. Nice gun, I really enjoy it. The .357 is also one of my favorite cailbers too. For a 9mm option in a auto I'd look into a Styr M9. VERy nice gun for the price. Something like 250 to 300 bucks cause their trying to clear old inventory. The gun is worth well over 300, its normal price is around 6, and its a direct competitor with Glock. Good guns, great clearance prices. But, I'm partial to either wheelguns (Revolvers) or 1911's.
