I don't know much about VW's so I'm not surprised that I haven't heard of that one. is it an American model?

I wasn't aware that the GTi was bad on insurance either, but again I don't knwo a great deal about VWs.

if the wolfsburg just needs some new coilovers to make it a GTI then it gets my vote.

The wolfsburg is a normal Jetta with a DSG transmission and a 2.0T engine. Just add coilovers and you have a GLI minus the body kit and seats.

After talking to my buddy about this over lunch we decided the best car to fit you requirements is a Golf GTI. It's the original hot hatch, it has an auto option, it's peppy, fun and the interior is better than most cars it competes with. I know a guy who has one and I can vouch that it is every bit as fun as an si.

I have one 🙂

Its a great option, but unfortunately will be insurance rape for him. Its in the same category as the WRX/Si/Evo, hence why I suggested the Jetta Wolfsburg. Its the same engine in a Jetta chassis minus the "sporty" designation. All it would take for a GLI transformation is to change out the front suspension.

Ehh GTI is too slow for how much it is. Sure the interior is nice but paying that much for a low 15 second high 14 second car is retarded when there's much better, faster, and more reliable cars out there.

I'm a DSG fan, and I also like turboed 4 bangers. How much do these cars go for?

It's no speed demon for sure, but it is sporty, well built, gets good mpg, and relatively cheap. It will cream your mom's Camry too, which for a first car is really all you need since that is what most kids get as their first car; their mom's Camry.

17-18k apparently, pretty decent deal. GTIs are severely detuned from the factory, an APR flash and mines pulling 250hp/300tq ish at the wheels

You want a 2008 if possible, the 2009's have maintenance included, but a shorter warranty (by 1 year) as well.

Cool, thanks again PhoKingGuy!! You are definitely the most helpful person i've found on AT for cars..

Any word on reliability on these?

My 08 GTI has been rock solid (only 14k miles so far), no problems/rattles or anything. I just had the DSG recall done awhile ago but otherwise solid. The MKV platform is pretty solid as far as I can see, still make sure that you get it checked out by a VW mechanic/carfax and that the previous owners weren't idiots. All 2.0t engines need premium fuel and synth oil, so if possibly make sure that's been done.

The VW ecu is pretty neat, if you have a vw mechanic worth their salt they can tell you exactly how many times the car has been redlined, launch control used, etc. Of course this can be cleared by the user as well, but its not common knowledge outside of the enthusiast community.

Good to hear.. I assume the ECU is also tweak-able.. But i'll save that for a while after I get a car..

Amazingly, i can only find 1 2.0T Jetta near KC. Hopefully i'll be able to find some in december.

That's weird, my local dealer has 4 on their used lot. There's a bunch on auto trader as well, but I am in so cal.

if you went to ERAU Arizona it woulda been a lot easier, haha

Just wanted to update the thread.. I've made the decision, and actually purchased it as well.

Picked up a 2008 Jetta Wolfsburg with 33,000 miles. Loving it so far.

Heres a pic:

Its absolutely flawless (tough to see in the pic b/c of the snow)
