UPDATE
Got the new car!!

Well, im finally looking to get a new (slightly used) car.

Here's what im looking for:
1. Sporty or atleast somewhat quick (im 18.. duh)
2. Price<=18,000 (possibly, POSSIBLY a little more if necessary)
3. Must be Automatic (parents requirement)
4. Reasonable on insurance
5. Looks cool
6. 2006 or newer

What I (and my parents) have considered so far:
Mistubishi Lancer GTS
VW Jetta

What else should I be looking at. Obviously the "looks cool" is opinion, so just post whatever you think and i'll take a look.

Thanks in advance guys. I know how helpful everyone is on AT!

I'd say a new 2010 Fusion S or SE but it's a few thousand over your price range.

Although a 2008/9 Fusion SEL might be in your range.

Maybe a used Mazda 3 or 6 as well.

Forgot to add.. We have looked at Mazda 6's and i like them quite a bit actually.

Anything else people recommend?

Must be an automatic? Everyone I know who drive sticks are generally better drivers than auto drivers. So why auto?

For about 1k more you can look into privately sold <40k miles Mustang GTs in that price range that are 2006.

Insurance would probably be a killer on that wouldn't it? I'll definitely check with my insurance just in case.

In case you cant read.. Its not my choice. My parents insist on getting an automatic. I know how to drive a manual, havent had tons of practice but i know how. Since they are definitely helping to pay for it I'm likely to follow their wishes..

Not sure really. My dad knows how to drive a manual.. So it might just be that they dont think i have driven a manual enough..

Ehh, my first car was a manual and I learned how to shift on it, no biggie. Try to convince them, you'll enjoy it. 🙂

Dont worry.. Still working on it.

You still never suggested any cars..

If I was in your position, I'd throw out the 2006 requirement and and try to find a 2004 Marauder. 😛

Plenty of get up, comfy, lots of room for extra-curricular activities. 😀

I'd say that the gearbox would be more important to me than the car, but, keep working on it. =D Anyways, I'd go with the GTS. For the price point, it's the most aggressive and sporty looking, and feeling car - at least, thats what I've determined in 10 minutes of online research. If you could swing a civic si, I'd suggest that.

Hopefully It works out. I haven't driven a manual in like 4 years (and it was a REALLY old car) but im sure it wouldn't take long to adapt to it.

Sporty + 18 years old = Reasonable on insurance?

Good luck with that!

Yeah, Yeah.. I know. Its "relatively reasonable" Meaning its not ridiculously high compared to most cars for people my age.

Alrighty now 🙂

I was in the same boar a few years back with regards to insurance and such, for you, anything will be expensive, it doesnt matter which. Getting a civic SI/GTI/STI is almost murder. (My old roommate paid 4500 a year for his STI, ridiculous, clean record too).

After talking with my agent, we found out anything American used would be the cheapest to insure, so the Focus/Fusion would be a good choice if you wanted to go that route.

Auto or manual is whatever, I know how to drive manual, but I prefer auto just because I live in socal and traffic is horrible, to each his own.

Jetta/Rabbit are pretty good cars, everyone I know with one hasnt had any problems outside of minor warranty stuff, but maintenance is a bit more expensive and parts will be in the long term. I like them just because the interior is so much better designed/built than anything in its class. (VW owner and fanboy here, im a bit biased)

The mitsu is shit, theres much better you can do for your money (Focus, Mazda3 mainly)

If you can find a pre-smiley face Mazda3 S, I suggest you go for that. I had one as a rental and it was pretty nice for what it was, either that or a Jetta.

G35 Sedan, sporty and comes in AT and MT flavors. As well as a proper FR layout.

The G35 Sedan is a safe car and is near the top of the least deaths per 10million or something like that. So insurance wont kill you.

And you can add reliability as well.

I pay 230 a month for insurance, I am 18. I got collision coverage, liability, comprehensive, no fault and a bit more.

Insurance will be murder for that. 18 year old male? My cobalt was 2k a year new when I was 18, I cant imagine what that would be.

What about a new golf TDI?

Not a big fan of the Golf look.. Dunno why.

Thanks for the tips PhoKingGuy! I'm kinda the same way about AT/MT.. I dont really do a lot of heavy traffic driving, so I dont know if it would be that difficult. Anybody want to convince me one way or another AT vs MT?

Lots of people that I know that drive manual think they are cooler cus they drive stick and are worse drivers cus of it and I live in the car capitol of the world.

CHECK INSURANCE RATES FOR WHATEVER CARS YOU ARE LOOKING AT BEFORE YOU MOVE FORWARD. INSURANCE RATES ARE GUARANTEED TO CHANGE YOUR MIND ON WHAT CAR YOU ARE GOING TO BUY.

Sporty+18= insurance rape

Volvo C30? Golf GTI speed+ fun but lacks the "speed" moniker that insurance companies see so might be a tad better (hopefully) and gets the nice premium feel

Also, tell your parents to stop being twats on the auto v manual, I can think of no good reason for that requirement.
