You have to take into account that your friend also had fries and a drink. Factor that in and I'm willing to bet that you did considerably better than him. Of course if you got chips and a drink as well it might be another story.
Something else that has to be mentioned is that even with the 6" subs you are eating more actual food than you are in a big mac, meaning you're likely to be fuller and eat less overall in the day because of it.
The reason why you might have felt bad is that you ate too much, which has that affect on you (you could eat the healthiest food in the world and if you eat too much of it you'll feel bad).
