Subaru's 2008 sales UP

Subaru said Monday its U.S. sales crept higher in 2008, making the Japanese manufacturer poised to be the only major automaker to post a yearly sales increase.

Subaru was the first automaker to report sales on Monday. Its December sales fell 7.7 percent to 17,287 units from 18,739 in December 2007, as a big increase in Forester sales failed to overcome declines in its remaining models.

But Subaru sales for all of 2008 rose by 0.3 percent to 187,699 vehicles from 187,208 in 2007

Otherwise, Ford's december sales are down 32 and Toyota's 37.

They are in an interesting postion. It's a very niche product portfolio with a ferverous following of consumers. I remember reading an article a few years back that Suburu has one of the longest vehicle ownerships of any major brands and they also have one of the highest owner loyalty ratings of any of the brands.

Basically, people rarely trade up, and when they do, it's usually for another one. That sort of buyer base would make for consistent sales. Plus they also have the bonus of being one of the few reasonably priced AWD wagon providers out there to suck up sales from people jumping ship from a full sized SUV.

I  my Subaru. The build quality, performance, mpg, looks, awd, cost and more give me everything I want in a car. My next car will most likely be a Subaru.

We (parents) went through a Justy (brother and I killed its CVT transmission in no time--I think at 40k km it was about dead. We did literally endless neutral drops on it) to two imprezas. I liked the imprezas a lot and the Justy was fun for its time. My wife thought the imprezas drove like a truck, but I always liked it and thought it looked cool. My younger brother has an impreza, so I guess that makes 3. I would definitely consider one again for the AWD up here.

If only more of their models came standard with (factory) sunroofs.

And I also think the Gen-3 Impreza looks like ass compared to the Gen-2 model. The Saab 9-2X was gorgeous.

Taken from an old Subaru article:

Gays are not only tuned in, but their wallets are also turned out. Subaru has been so successful at attracting gay customers that some drivers consider themselves members of a "club," in which fellow Subaru owners share an implied message behind their cars' brand. "I'm never surprised when I look across a lane of traffic and see a woman in a Subaru and think she might be gay," said Kim Mills, who cruises in a Subaru Impreza.

So by correlation, it appears more people came out of the closet in 2008.

😕 I never heard that about Subaru's. I guess I'm not in the know in that regard? 😛

The other thing to keep in mind is too is that Subaru sells as many cars in a year as Toyota/Ford/GM sell in a month.

They aren't as dependent on government contracts, fleet(commercial) sales, and rentals nor to they cater to "subprime" borrowers who aren't able to secure financing in this economy.

Subarus are huge in the lesbian communities of the NE, and Pacific Northwest. You also see a lot of lesbians driving Jeep Wranglers in those areas.

The new hippie mobile in the Pacific NW, that replaced the VW bus, is the early 90's Legacy wagons.

Me, neither. I'd never heard it.

That's common knowledge almost to the point of being a joke in Portland.

Combine that with the boy racers when the WRX came out and what do you have? Lesboy racers?

Stupid SOA, bring back the LGT Wagon with a manual transmission! I don't want an outback.

Funny, I left the Subaru dealership last Tuesday after deciding we couldn't come to a deal, and now have a voice-mail from the dealer saying he thinks he might have worked out something.
I think I heard at least three sales announced over the PA in the few hours I was there (over two different visits).

<--- Looking at '09 Forester base model automatic

I was interested in an Impreza until I sat in one at the local auto show. Man did it seem cheap. The climate control knobs felt like they would break off in my hands and in general the rest was on par or below my current Focus.

In my opinion they have made a mistake pulling out the WRC.

My opinion may be slightly biaised since Prodrive is only 20 minutes drive from where I live 🙂

Plus the new Impreza should have been a saloon and estate, not a hatchback.

I will not be replacing my 2005 Impreza WRX with the new Impreza - the Lancer Evo looks a better option to me now (and it has had better reviews).

In the northeast it wasn't really attached to homosexuals, it was more people that didn't want to slide around in the snow.

Me think it is on purpose, the LGT Wagon was cutting into Outback sales.

Never heard that lesbian thing, and I can't think of even one example but I guess I could sort of see it. Your average subaru around here has one of those dog cages in the back and in driven by a late 30s to late 40s professional woman with no fashion sense. I can see some overlap in demographics. 😀

I think the reason subaru does well is it has its own niche that nobody else seems to even try to compete in. How many other moderately sized wagons are there? Much less moderately sized wagons with AWD? I can only think of Volvo, and those are a good deal more expensive right?

There isn't anywhere else to go for that kind of car that I can think of. You either end up buying a SUV, a too small hatchback likely W/O AWD or a more expensive Volvo.

Nice cars and would consider an Outbook as my next vehicle. But they do need to get with the times and update their 4-speed Auto-transmission to a 5 or 6 speed.

Yep. That puts a big dent in the mpg and one reason I haven't bought one.
