I grew up in PA, and there were many places that called it a Hoagie and even places called them grinders. It really depends on where you are and what place you go to. I know I could go back home and still find places that sell them by any name.

In Philly, we call them "Hoagies". If you go to a deli and dare tell the clerk that you want a "sub" or "hero", that man is liable to punch your fvcking mouth loose.
 
I've gotten used to calling it a sub since no one around here knows what a hoagie is. We still call it a hoagie at home though.
