Sub 18" LCDs w/ 1600x1200 Resolution

Are there any out there? And if not, does anybody think they will ever get this high of a resolution? Is there a technology barrier?

Probably not a technical barrier, but a market barrier - you have to be talking about native resolution - under 18 inches, text would be too small for most users. I have two 18 inchers @ 1280 x 1024, and that requires a 130% zoom factor to be readable for text. My laptop is 15.6, and is 1024 x 768 NR. The text on all three is about the same.

Ah, I see. I have my 17" CRT at work at 1600x1200, so after a few years, I have sworn by 1600x1200. Just was wondering, cuz that Dell 1800FP or whatever LCD deal it was was definately pretty hot.

You also run into a bandwidth problem when running 1600x1200 on a DVI connection. Bottom line is that it doesn't have the bandwidth to do it well.

disagreement on that last statement... 🙂

I'm running a Samsung 240T @ 1920x1200 on a DVI connection. The driver takes advantage of the blanking refresh (or something like that) to transmit data on this interval which is used in CRT's but not on LCDs generally (IIRC).

But I've also been looking for 18"-19" LCDs with >= 1600x1200 resolution. Haven't found any yet though. Anyone know?

Hrmm.. then why are there 1600x1200 resolution screens in laptops (15 inch LCD screens)? Quite often too... 😕

Around the time of the Windows "Longhorn" release, we should start to see a lot of new high-resolution LCDs. "Longhorn" will offer full 120+dpi support for every element on the desktop (every graphic, widget, font, icon, etc). That means you could use a 15" LCD at 1600x1200 resolution and still have everything on your desktop look as if it is running 1024x768 or 1152x864--except everything would be much sharper.

When I was installing some PCs at work, we had a 17" Fujitsu TFT, and I was able to push that up to 1600x1200, and it worked. Not sure of any model numbers, but I saw it myself, so it is possible 🙂

That would be cool. Do the current builds that are out have this? 😉

eh? Tell me more. I just remember reading an article over at overclockers.com (can't find it now...go figure) about the bandwidth of the DVI connection and how a newer connection is in the works.

That's why many high-res LCDs have dual DVI connections - to essentially divide the load.

This is actually a myth perpetuated by reviewers who don't bother to read the DVI design white papers. The full 165Mhz single link bandwidth can support just over 1920x1200 at 60hz with LCD blanking intervals (about 5%).

Dual link can support over 2048x1536 at 60hz.

Yeah, why can Dell put a gorgeous 15" screen in a laptop that is 1600x1200 (I think UXGA), but we can't find any 18" LCDs on the market that will do 1600x1200? I've seen the Dell display on an Inspiron (8100 I think)..its pretty gorgeous

I won't be at that site til at least Thursday, that is if I am needed there. However I'll ask my boss if he can let me know the model number if I don't go there on Thursday.

Cuz people look at their laptops a lot closer than they look at their desktop screens!

Have you seen people trying to collaborate on a laptop??? they're like hogs fighting to stick their noses in a trough! well, maybe not literally, but people DO have to look at the screen closer.

There's no market for high-res, low-inch LCDs on the desktop. Sure, 1 in 100 computer enthusiasts would love to squish 12pt fonts to 2 millimeters in height... but stick that in front of the other 99 people and they'll save $200 to get the display that shows everything in a size close to what they're used to!

Samsung mentioned to me a while ago it is basically a marketing thing. No one produces a 1600x1200 sub 18" LCD because there is very little market there - not enough to justify tooling over massive amounts of substrate production.
