About a month ago I was visiting my parents in California. I flew there, so I didn't have my own car. I was burrowing their car to drive around during the day.

I was heading North on a street, while a police officer was heading South. When he passed me, he thought I was talking on the phone, which is illegal in the state of California. He quickly made a U turn and pulled me over. Upon his request I showed him my phone, he looked through the call log and found that I was not talking on the phone while driving. He asked me to get out of the vehicle and stand outside. I didn't have my drivers license on me (stupid I know, I just left my wallet at home). He looked up my information and let me back into my vehicle.

Heh, he even went so far as to say "I thought I got you", then handed me a ticket for a cracked windshield and no license on my person. Ack, not a big deal right? It's jsut a fix it ticket. Kinda lame because it's not my car and I don't live in this state, but ok I can fix it. Eventually the windscreen was replaced.

Today I went to the police station and showed documentation on the repair and my DL, the cop was nice and signed me off. She then informed me it would cost $50! Weak! I fixed the windscreen, that's not enough?

No good deed goes unpunished I guess. It's pretty lame to get pulled over on false pretenses and still get fined for something. It wouldn't suck as much if the officer said something like "I'm sorry for suspecting you of using your cell phone, but I still have to write this fix it ticket" or something like that. Or just admitted to his mistake.

TLDR
Got pulled over for talking on the cell phone, when I wasn't
Got ticket for a broken windscreen
Fixed windscreen
$50 fine, fuck that

oh please, stop acting like you are a victim here. If this is the worst of your problems in life, consider yourself extremely lucky.

Did you also get a citation for not having your license?

If I ever read a thread about some bogus ticket and the black and white law-and-order types didn't roll in here calling people criminals and saying they deserve it, I think my head would explode.

OP should at least get the $50 from his parents, if not the cost of fixing their car.

Yeah, I do know that. I just know that, like bruceb, I'd prefer it be done in a shop. And it really depends on the size of the crack. Just seems like a bullshit fine, IMO. A simple do-it and prove-it ticket would suffice, at the burden of the car owner. There is no reason for a friend of mine to fix my window if it is my car that he was driving when pulled over, my window... my problem.

What's a shop really going to change on this kind of job? It's literally a < 60min procedure.

At the shop you have to drop it off then pick it up...when they come to you, you just throw them the keys and it's no impact on your day.

I have had glass work done both ways and I prefer them coming to me. Also as far as post-fix trouble...3 times at a shop I have had to go back, only once at my office and that was only because they didn't realize their goop was visible when I put my trim back on.

The latest at a shop they stripped out a retainer screw, tried to glue it back and then filled the drain channel with goop in an attempt to fix it.

I had it back there 3 times and they finally told me it was a body shop issue.

I took a crack at it on my last 'staycation' and found out about them gluing the screw to the retainer. The water was going in through the now open screw hole and into the car.

I fixed the hole, retapped it and now it's been as dry as can be. A 45 min fix tied up 3 hours of my time.

How else are you going to balance their budget? By raping their citizens.

You should be lucky the fine was so low or didn't get your car impounded for driving with no license. I've been through many checkpoints before where they check for this very thing. You'd be surprise to find how much other things they find during these checkpoints.

They used my name and looked up my license on their fancy computer thing. I'm sure it had my picture. I was able to support this by showing the insurance paperwork that shared my surname. It became clear that I did have a drivers license, I just didn't have it on me.

A fix it ticket shouldn't cost the citizen any extra money. Why call it a fix it ticket? Why not call it a misdemeanor and attach a fine to it and a bigger fine if the violation isn't corrected? A fix it ticket should be a fine ONLY if the responsible party doesn't correct the violation, not both.

a fix it ticket is about proving the vehicle is fixed not getting out of the fine.

Whiny bitches like the OP are what make our generation look like idiots. From 88 being in his username, I assume he's 22 now. It's time to man up, bend over, and take life like the rest of the world.
