Stupid ticket fines

About a month ago I was visiting my parents in California. I flew there, so I didn't have my own car. I was burrowing their car to drive around during the day.

I was heading North on a street, while a police officer was heading South. When he passed me, he thought I was talking on the phone, which is illegal in the state of California. He quickly made a U turn and pulled me over. Upon his request I showed him my phone, he looked through the call log and found that I was not talking on the phone while driving. He asked me to get out of the vehicle and stand outside. I didn't have my drivers license on me (stupid I know, I just left my wallet at home). He looked up my information and let me back into my vehicle.

Heh, he even went so far as to say "I thought I got you", then handed me a ticket for a cracked windshield and no license on my person. Ack, not a big deal right? It's jsut a fix it ticket. Kinda lame because it's not my car and I don't live in this state, but ok I can fix it. Eventually the windscreen was replaced.

Today I went to the police station and showed documentation on the repair and my DL, the cop was nice and signed me off. She then informed me it would cost $50! Weak! I fixed the windscreen, that's not enough?

No good deed goes unpunished I guess. It's pretty lame to get pulled over on false pretenses and still get fined for something. It wouldn't suck as much if the officer said something like "I'm sorry for suspecting you of using your cell phone, but I still have to write this fix it ticket" or something like that. Or just admitted to his mistake.

TLDR
Got pulled over for talking on the cell phone, when I wasn't
Got ticket for a broken windscreen
Fixed windscreen
$50 fine, fuck that

I don't get it. Fixing the windshield when you were obligated to by law isn't a good deed. It's called a fix-it ticket for a reason.

traffic cops will only be getting worse as they scramble to suck as much money out of us as they can before the cars start driving themselves; and driving cops out of jobs.

So you got a ticket for something you deserved, but think you shouldn't have because that's not what he pulled you over for?

You're an idiot.

I shouldn't have gotten pulled over in the first place. The fix it ticket was given as an afterthought.

So?

You're saying if you were pulled over because the cop thought you were on your phone, then discovered you had a dead hooker in the back seat it shouldn't be dealt with accordingly?

I know that's an extreme, but it doesn't negate the fact that you broke a law and were treated accordingly

It's not his windshield, not his car, not his obligation. The ticket goes the vehicle just like a parking ticket. Taking care of it because it happened while he was "burrowing" the car is doing a good deed. Shows his parents raised him right.

Had a similar BS experience with a fix-it ticket... wife went to the DMV to register our new vehicle (while driving the new vehicle with in-transits in the window that were good until a few weeks later), and upon finishing the paperwork, getting receipts, etc, she went to head home from the DMV to get a screw driver to install the plates while in the garage (cold day in November). On her way home, gets pulled over for having in-transits, to which she informs the officer that she just registered the car no more than 5-10 minutes ago at the DMV's office. Showed him documentation, plates, and everything. He responds with a prove ticket that must be signed off on by another officer after the plates are installed.

Fortunately for my wife, I was in an accident later that day in our other car, and an officer was present to sign the document given her by the other officer. His response was, "He seriously gave you a ticket when you had the documentation in the vehicle?"

Not sure what is illegal about in-transits that are still within the written date, but if they wanna pull you over... they will. To protect and serve... well, not always. Not sure what part of protecting and serving that did; and just created more work for my wife and I to deal with on Thanksgiving week. Happy holidays to that prick, that's for sure.

You shouldn't have been driving in the first place with a cracked windshield. IMHO they should have impounded the vehicle on the scene and had it repaired at your cost.

Kinda have to drive it to a place to get it fixed... don't ya? You like being an ass about every topic on this message board?

Is this how you burrow a car?

Does anyone else ever get the idea that cops are in no way, shape or form in the business of actually helping people? "Protect and serve" is the biggest joke ever.

I'm very pro law enforcement, but the whole attitude of doing their best to see what they can catch us doing so we have to pay fines seems to take away from the real service they are supposed to be providing society.

No you don't. Most windshield repair companies will come to where the car is at and change it right there. Very common and done here all the time. But given a choice, I would prefer it be done at an indoor shop.

Someone breaks a law and I am the ass?

Are you still a kid, you seem like you have to be to not know that most 'glass shops' come to you for a windshield repair.

There is also towing.

Don't break laws and I don't be an ass...it's like magic.

Well you should be happy its just about the cheapest ticket I have ever heard of in California even parking tickets are $60

I got pulled over when driving a friends car for no reason and they gave us a fix-it ticket for a windshield when there was no possible way they could have seen it from their vantage point.

Towing to get glass fixed. That sounds like a marvelous idea. Cause, you know, the car can't run if there is a chip in the glass. And it is simply a wonderful idea to pay a guy 80-100 bucks to tow a workable vehicle to a glass shop.

And yes, I know glass shops come out to fix such things, but it seems a trivial thing to me for a cop to scoff about. I suppose if the crack truly obstructed the driver's vision, then perhaps it is a legitimate safety issue.

All that aside, a crack in the glass hardly seems worth a $50 ticket. It seems like a swing and a miss from the officer on the phone charge, and simply something to compensate for his mistake.

And if the vehicle doesn't belong to the op... eh, never mind, I already know what you're going to say.

he is an ass, but i dont know of a glass company that wont come to you and fix the windshield.

i had cracks across my windshield for 3 years and cops never stopped me or cited me for it. it did get mentioned by a couple cops, but no ticket or anything.

Yeah, I do know that. I just know that, like bruceb, I'd prefer it be done in a shop. And it really depends on the size of the crack. Just seems like a bullshit fine, IMO. A simple do-it and prove-it ticket would suffice, at the burden of the car owner. There is no reason for a friend of mine to fix my window if it is my car that he was driving when pulled over, my window... my problem.
