Stupid Galaxy S3 lacks actual voice dialing.

Give me my Note back and I can duplicate it over and over again doing a Google search instead of calling my dad. And it can't even be chalked up to it not understanding what I said, because every single time it did the wrong thing it would search for "call dad" so it understood me perfectly. Lots of people have this same problem, now it might have been fixed in Jelly Bean. But that's a moot point seeing majority of Android owners aren't running JB. I don't care if everything else in the app works great, contact dialing is a damn basic command that my Sony non smartphone from 7 years ago did.

never had an issue with this on many S3s.
We use the S3 as the company issued cell phone now.
Never during setup have I had issues with it not dialing.
and the S3 does have a driving mode stock as well.

S voice then say "driving mode on/off" is the command.

Yeah, but "Google Voice" is something else entirely.

...it also does suck (the app does).

Not a moot point, since this is about the GS3, which has jelly bean. Besides, Google search was updated to work in the same way, minus Google Now, on non jelly bean phones.

This has nothing to do with the issue. So a :thumbsdown: for your remark.
It's not up to you to decide what someone should or should not do with his phone. In my country it's legal to use a bluetooth headset while driving, so this is a genuine question.

Welcome to Anandtech! Some cities and counties here have passed laws making even speakerphone illegal, so I feel your pain. 🙁 There might even be a state or two that has done it.

I find it silly to forbid BT calling. It's actually as distracting as talking to people sitting next to you or even worse, in the backseat. Maybe next year, this will be illegal too ?
Talking in the car takes your attention away from the driving part... for sure.
But again, it's not up to Samsung to decide what you should or should not do.... as I have the same issues regarding the app's Apple "allows" on my IPAD : who are they to decide this for me ? I thought the US were the 'land of the free' ?
 
That's exactly how I feel about it. What's next? Laws saying you can't change the channel on your radio? Laws saying you can't LISTEN to your radio (listening to a heated political debate that neglects to make the point you would make = ROAD RAGE!)?!

We already have laws against negligence or distracted driving which can be applied to any of those things on a case-by-case basis without making them out-right illegal. It isn't necessary. 🙁

You joke, but my 2011 car already locks out doing certain things on the GPS if you're in motion. Truthfully I understand why because it would certainly be a distraction.

Why would you turn data off?my gs3 is in 4g 24/7 whats the point of this thread when you are purposly making the cell not work the way you want.

So you want the cell to call someone but you dont want data on while doing it?

I just tested it using google search and said call bro and it worked with data and wifi off.

I dont know what your talking about.I can also tell the phone to open apps etc

Re-read the OP. There are plenty of places where you can make a voice call without reliable data service. Offline voice recognition continues working fine. The newer stuff that relies on a server to process it does not. Siri often says that she "can't help you right now." I don't even have an iOS device and yet I hear that one often enough.

Similarly, when I get near a McDonald's or other WiFi restaurant or retail store with WiFi, I suddenly can't make calls because I have my phone set to use Google Voice and the phone's native dialer hangs waiting for GV to connect. It never will connect unless I open my browser and accept the place's WiFi agreement; which I usually can't do because I'm outside and the signal is too bad. Hell, it even does this when I am trying to let my brother know I'm outside his apartment and I need him to come let me in (hops on his weak/distant WiFi from the parking lot or outside the back of the building; fails to obtain an IP address). Android fails by not having a simple "Connect automatically?" option to disable for each WiFi network (especially public... grrr), but that's not the point.

The point is that things like this don't gracefully fall back from WiFi to cellular data to a local alternative when there is a problem. Siri, Google Now, and S-Voice should all transparently try WiFi (if connected), then cellular data, then fall back to a limited local voice commands if the server is not available (same as before these things were processed on the server side on older handsets).

Iv never used s voice on my phone and I can still do voice dailing with s voice on with no data.and who cares if data is on or off as this thread is a sad attempt to bad mouth a gs3

Voice dailing works just fine with or without data and with or without s voice enabled.

Voice recognition is part of jellybean os and built into the phone.voice typing also works with data off too

Hey, if you enabled S-voice, disabled data and you can still do voice dialing, that's productive to this thread because everyone else is saying it didn't. I can't verify worth squat because I don't have the phone.
 
Im not using s voice im using the os to do it.you can have s voice on but why botther when googles version is 10x better.

Ill tey using s voice now with no data

Two things:
You aren't using Google Now or S-Voice if you don't have data.* :colbert:
Google Voice is not what you think it is.

*We know about that. That's plain-jane voice dialer that doesn't do anything special. You shouldn't have to give up S-Voice or Google Now when they are available just to use the normal voice dialing when they aren't. It should be automatic. It isn't. that's the problem. Get it?

Or maybe it's S-Voice that he was mistaken about.

Because Google Voice does work without data.
