It works for me. If I say call "X", it calls X.

I think you have it backwards. Siri is not even close to Google Now. Google Now is far more useful. I love the realtime commute traffic report it provides me without asking. That is brilliant.

I have to say 'Call "X" at "Y"' for it to work. Even if I only have one number per contact, I still have to specify "mobile" or "work". On Siri, I can say "Call X" and it just dials the cell phone number if it's the only one in my address book.

Google Now is creepy. A few days after I had my GNex, it started giving me the transit times between my house and work, or vice-versa, without me specifying where either location was. It wasn't EXACT, but it was close enough. Too creepy. And while I'm sure some people will find something like that useful, like yourself, I have no use for it at all. I'm going home one way or another and there's really only one way to get there.

Anyone know if 4.1 update for S3 will include Google Now?

Yeah it will, there's a leaked JB rom for the international S3 and it has google now in it, they added some other stuff too such as the expanded notifications.

I have to say my favorite thing about google now is that it adds cards for places you've searched for on google, if I'm looking up restaurants or something on my desktop PC then it'll add cards for those places with transit time from my current destination and a shortcut to navigation.

You are probably the only person in the world using "voice dialing"

Get over it

Nothing is perfect, including your Galaxy S3

Actually me and thousands of other motorcyclists use voice dial. When your phone is burried under layers of leather it is the only way to make a call on the move.
It is also a deal breaker. I was going to pick up an S3 until I saw this. I guess I'll just have to continue with the Iphones.

yup, this is killer. i use my n7 for nav in the car, and all i have to do is open up google now and tap the directions to get going.

Welcome to Anandtech, fellow motorcycle cellphone user. :)

Thanks M8, was ready to chuck my iphone for this one but now not sure. Have read a number of issues with the phone including not being able to use aftermarket earphones???? how can that be!! Another said sound quality was poor and I use my phone for music a lot.

My other issue is update problems with droids. You seem to wait forever and a day if they show up at all. How can there not be a 4.1 available yet for this flagship phone????? More research I guess.

Not sure what someone was talking about with earphones- the phone works with any earphones, of course. I can only speculate they were talking about headphone volume control like that included headphones have.

I haven't noticed any issue with the sound quality.

Also, the only time I use voice dialing is in the car. Paired with my car's bluetooth speaker, I hit the speaker's talk button and s-voice comes up on the phone. I say "Call X" and it calls X. For me, I haven't found any real reason to view this as any less useful than Google's voice commands- just it's different.

I have read a number of users complaining about the mic not working with aftermarket earphones. As far as voice dial, I need it to work from the earphones. On the bike, the phone is buried in leather. With my iphone I just hold down the on off button on the earphones and voice assistant activates and I make the call.

I was shocked when someone said the OP was the last person on earth to use voice dialing. It's a must have for me. When I tried to use it on my s3 and couldn't, i was pretty upset; i purchased the phone outright, and had to do a lot of justification to my wife why i "needed" the phone.!! :)

Anyway, after about a week of trial and error, i've finally got a solution that works. It seems to have a lot to do with the particular headset, as well as the software. I have four BT devices... a BlueAnt ST3, an LG HSB 700, a Plantronics BackBeat Go, and an older plantronics earpiece thingy... (v720?).

Anyway, i tried dozens of pieces of software from the store, testing with the LG.... none worked. Whenever I pushed the call button on the headset, it would just redial the last number.

I was in total despair... I finally loaded cyberon's Voice Commander (it was dead in the list of choices because it was $6), and decided to use the BBG, just for fun. Push the call button and Voila! It worked. not only did it work, but it worked pretty well. And not only did it work reasonably well, but it does so without network access.

The app worked, so I tried the LG... still dialed the last number. Also tried the ST3, which did the same thing.

Finding the working combination was a royal PITA, but it let me like my phone again ("but honey... it's so *pretty*!) ...

Also note, this is by no means scientific or rigorous... I wasn't in it to review all the apps/headsets, i just kept trying stuff until i found something that worked.

Oh yeah... I think the os version has something to do with it as well. The S3 I have (i747) is currently running 4.0.4.

Of course, YMMV.

good luck.

Modern life is all about the email baby!

Most headsets can trigger at least two functions in addition to answer/end.

Some times tap triggers something, sometimes it doesn't.
Some times short hold triggers something, sometimes it doesn't.
Some times double-tap triggers something, sometimes it doesn't.

My last headset was the Plantronics Voyager Pro+. One tap would answer incoming call, end current call, or switch to a second paired device if there was no call. Two taps would redial the last number. Short hold would trigger voice control.

I've used headsets from Samsung and Jabra that functioned the opposite way, where one tap would trigger voice control and short hold would redial.

Experiment.

Then how do you dial when you drive. Right now I have to pick the phone up when driving and press the buttons on the phone to dial. I am mainly concerned with getting a ticket for dialing on my phone.
S-Voice..."call home" "do you want me to call home?" "yes" Beep...ring

DCal430 was asking Vdubchaos how he makes a call while driving if he does not use voice dialing.

With the Bluetooth connection in my car, silly. You would think that most people who pay $80 a month for phone service can also afford a modern car with Bluetooth, no? It seems to be a standard option on most cars made after 2010.

I'm sure as hell not touching my phone while driving to make a call, that's for sure... It's illegal in my state.

Of course Google Now needs more work. Both Siri and Google Now are still primitive and early alpha/beta products.

Google Now is not really about talking back to you. It's about getting you the information you ask or thinking about asking. Which is logical considering Google has the best search engine and knows lot of your habits. Stuff like traffic report and estimation of arrival based on traffic flow is very useful to me. And I don't even have to ask. Google Now displays it based on the time and my location. I had dentist appointment listed on my calendar and Google Now alerted me I needed to leave if I wanted to make the appointment in time by gauging the realtime traffic flow to the dentist office with navigation. I didn't even set reminder or ask. That is what makes Google Now brilliant and useful. I'm not going to ask my phone stuff for entertainment. If it can predict and tell me stuff based on the data it has, that is more useful to me. And if I want to search or ask something, there's not better search engine than Google.

That sounds awesome. Is there an equivalent to that in IOS6? I think Reminders has something like that will remind you as you leave home/work but not something that activates an app/nav.

It works for me. If I say call "X", it calls X.

I think it works pretty well, but my problem with voice dialing in the car is that I still have to pick up phone, unlock screen, enter PIN, hit Mic button (and possible exit the music/podcast app first) THEN say "dial X".

Going 75 mph that's a lot of time to be fiddling with the phone.

edit: oh yeah. I think Google Now is pretty cool too. Search for a restaurant on my computer, and later I'll get a thing in the notification bar on my phone with driving time to that location, and I can tap it and go straight to the map. It's now also pretty reliably giving me a notification with traffic home about the time I usually leave work. Sure it may need work, but the concept is cool

Time to set up some NFC tags

have to unlock phone to read NFC tags.
At least as far as I've been able to tell with my playing around with it, and for security that's probably a better setup too.

Got the Atooma app the other day, and I guess I could set screen timeout or lock to be longer if GPS is going above a certain speed or something..?

Or get a car dock? Wow! the Gnex dock is in stock at the Play store?! Been OOS of 2 months! maybe I should grab one. ouch! $68 with shipping? for real? and it won't even work with my case..
