Just curious, why leave your phone locked while in the car?
My screen locks after 60 s or when I hit the power button, so my phone is pretty much always locked. Maybe I'm paranoid..
How do you do it?

(ps as I said I don't have a car dock which could be set to keep it awake and solve these problems)

You should always lock the screen when you're not using it so you don't accidentally interact with the touch screen while picking it up and putting it in your pocket. Do you leave the screen on all the time and end up running your battery dead or pocket-dialing people by accident?

Yeah, I have a car dock (dock mode triggered by NFC- my old DX used to just have a simple magnet to trigger car mode) which keeps the phone awake while plugged in and docked in the car. Also, I'd recommend a decent Bluetooth speaker for your car which can answer or make calls even when the phone is locked.

Ichinisan: keywords were while in the car

Cool, that's what I want too. Actually just ordered the Gnex car dock from the Play store now, since it's finally back in stock. Crazy expensive, but worth it to not crash I guess.. 😵

What's a "decent" BT headset? Or is a speaker better? I got the Plantronics M50, since it was just $30, but people said it sounds like I'm under water, so pretty much worthless. Is that just the way BT headsets are? I've never used them before.. (and there's no way I'm spending $90 for those fancy ones!)

Get a better headset. Better quality headsets sound better than using the phone normally. I have a Platronics 975 and it has awesome sound quality on both ends of the call. I know you don't want to spend a ton but check out reviews.

There are MANY of us who have to make calls from our cars while travelling but have strict laws about calling while driving, not to mention the safety aspect (which is why they made the laws). Samsung's neglect of voice dialling is a safety issue that I suspect will cost lives.

You are probably the only person in the world using "voice dialing"

Get over it

Nothing is perfect, including your Galaxy S3

I just press the google search widget mic button and say "call___". It does work. I am on a gs3. I jusy tried it about fifteen times and at worked every time.

I have a mod that launches Google Now instead of S-Voice, but I think both requires 3G.. why don't you have 3G working?

You can download the offline voice recognition. See middle option.

If you really care about safety and lives, you won't be using a phone while driving period.
Whether you're using hands free, voice dialing, drinking hot coffee, eating a hamburger, or anything else on the phone while driving is irrelevant. All those things are a safety issue and cost lives.

Actually. I might have mistakenly stumble on a solution for you.

I went to app manager and then proceeded to disable s-voice. And the default android voice dialer popped up for me.

This one doesn't use network to recognize. Iirc

Edit. Just tried on airplane mode. Works fine and recognizes with no problems.

This is exactly the way iPhone Siri works. With Siri disabled, it reverts to 3GS/4 voice control.

Huh, I just tried this & it barely recognizes my request. It mostly just says I didn't catch that, then quits. On the extremely rare chance it does recognize my request, I still have to choose whether to call or cancel.

I still find it most reliable to use the mic button on the Google Search Widget. It works offline & has been 99% accurate & automatically calls for you.

And when I use to use it 6 months ago 80% of the time when I said "call dad" it would perform a Google search for "call dad"

Google Voice is a POS that needs a lot of work.

You mean Google Voice _Search_. Google Voice is something else entirely. I never tried doing 'dad', etc or anything since I use full names, and those work reasonably well.

i just tried it on my jell beaned sensation and it go directly to my dad's contacts at the top, then underneath is the web results. if i try a contact that only has 1 number it just calls it.

it might just be a jellbean thing though. this android revision is top notch. its like win7 for android

The old pre Jelly Bean Google Voice Search definitely sucked. Jelly Bean + Google Now/Voice Search is pretty miles ahead of Siri

ACTUALLY, in most states of the USA, you MUST dial by voice or you get an expensive ticket in the car. So a voice dialer is important!

True the 'S voice' is sort of a Fail but try:
Voice Control Test (VERY good and FAST dialer)
AND
Assistant by 'speakoit' Speakoit assistant is amazing and much faster than S-Voice. She can do anything that S-voice can and faster. She also sets-up a morning 'briefing' of things you do that day using your calendar, email, task, weather...etc (actually speaks them to you). It also will incorporate your facebook account, evernote account, etc as well. It's a very complete Asisstant (better than Siri) and you only pay for a better voice. I purchased the UK female voice because I liked it. They have many voices though. That is the only cost.

QUOTE=DCal430;33875033]This is one of the most retarded things, even a 20 year old phone has actual voice dialing. The only way to do voice dialing on the S3 is to use S-Voice, which REQUIRES you to be on Wifi or 3G, further it has a lot of issues on WiFi and for many doesn't work. Every time I try to use it in Wifi all I get is "Network Error, Please Try Again".

This makes it so I am unable to use my phone while driving in many places, incredibly retarded.[/QUOTE]
