OK, who started this stupid "<former player> to retire as <former team>" thing?

I task you, ATOT, find the earliest reference to this happening so I know who to direct my venom.

And the stupidity marches on...

And my original quest remains unfulfilled:

"I task you, ATOT, find the earliest reference to this happening so I know who to direct my venom."

What is wrong with you? Players retire with whatever team they want, usually the team they began their career with. Are you stupid?

Are you stupid? I know that it goes on. It is not like I denied that it happens. I had two points that you obviously are too stupid to understand:

1. I find it stupid;
2. Find out who started it.

LOL, why do you care who started it? Are you going to hunt them down and punish them?

Really? OK :D

I actually think it means a lot to the player, and to his fans, but whatever.

It probably means something to the player, but, I am a fan, and I think it is stupid, even when Roger Craig and Jerry Rice did it (and probably Joe Montana, but I do not specifically recall it), and I am a HUGE 49ers fan.

Maybe. ;)

Actually, I am just curious who started it, why it happened and what the reaction was at the time.

How about this, we'll start a thread determining which one is more stupid.

Fred Taylor for showing loyalty to the fan base he feels most endeared to, for drafting him 9th overall and starting his career with. Or you for thinking its stupid for someone to live their life the way they want.

How much you want to bet that more people think you're stupid for thinking this is stupid?

Please link one thread where I "proved" that I was stupid.

You may be right, I may be more stupid than Fred Taylor's actions, but it also admits that Fred Tayor's actions are stupid.

That being said, I am open to new ideas:

You made a pretty bold statement (personal attack). Back it up.

Add the poll to this thread, no need to start a new one.

Poll option one: Motion man is stupid for thinking retiring with your most beloved team is stupid.
Poll option two: Fred Taylor is stupid for retiring with the Jaguars instead of with the Patriots.

Because thats what, in essence, you are saying. He has to retire somewhere - so why should he do it with the team he started his career with, where he gained 10k yards and was their first stud running back, where he thinks the fans will appreciate his accomplishments more, etc. When he could retire in New England where he probably feels like he didn't accomplish much at all because he was hurt all the time, and also because he probably doesn't want to be labeled a cheater under Bellichick.

When you are a bona-fide "star" it is very normal yes. Fred Taylor is in the 10k club and only 30 RB's are in it - so its quite the accomplishment.

Based on your logic, Joe Montana was stupid for retiring with the 49ers and not the Kansas City Chiefs.

So it is a league rule that bona-fide stars have to retire with a team. Link?

And, yes, I think it was stupid for Joe Montana to retire "as a 49er". He could have just held a press conference (in the Bay area, even) to announce his retirement without the fake "as a 49er" 1-day contract B.S.
