Actually the normal good doing citizen solves most of the crimes.

Look at the Elizabeth Smart case. They were searching for
months and then a citizen spotted them and gave the tip
leading to the capture.

You confronted him and almost got your ass beat. You need to learn how to manage situations because you went about it the wrong way.

What was he supposed to do? Just forget about it? I personally would have just got his plates.

It was the officers fault, he didn't leave much of an alternative.

The officer was on a power trip, KNEW with full well that he was in no immidate danger. He was accompanied by another officer AND he had already had the chance to asses the two people in question. If the officer had handled the situation properly:

A) He wouldn't have pulled them over in the first place. (moot)
B) He would have at least been able to provide a semi-legit reason for the stop,
C) He could have addressed thier concerns with why they were pulled over.

Also, NEVER ask for the badge number.

Why? If the officer is confident in the way hes handled a situation he should have no problem providing this information.

You confronted him and almost got your ass beat.

He didn't confront the officer. He got out of his car and repeated his question from a distance.

I respect the risks cops take... I understand the dangers of road-side stops. We've all seen/heard about those stops that go terribly wrong.... BUT... I have a problem when a cop thinks he doesn't need to justify his actions. They aren't above the law.

Thats a big no kiddin. Wow.

As far as getting out of the car....You idiots are saying NEVER DO IT!
Ok, so then its ok for the cops to disregard established laws and abuse their power and we should sit in the car and take it? The cop woulda drove off just like that. I personally would have called 911 or the FBI RIGHT THERE. And most likely an attorney too. You dont EVA FVCKING WALK AWAY FROM ME. Not as a cop, by God you abuse your power I'll get every agency and every legal advisor I can to run you up n down all day long.

Course, my loathing of cops may come from the 5 years I spent hoping they didnt pull me over and search me :D

How does the state of washington feel? Knowing one of their police chiefs
was a rapist and then turned on his wife and shot her dead and himself
right in front of their young kids!

The system has MAJOR flaws. Its time these dirty cops are put
on front street!

Why.

If they don't do dirt

then

they cover their partners ass who does.

they won't rat their own out when they know they should.

When pulled over by cops, even if they are completely in the wrong, there are 3 things you never do:
- Get out of the car
- Admit to having been drinking
- Talk out of turn, too much, or get confrontational.

Let me be clear. I don't like cops. My opinion is that a very large majority of them are corrupt and completely disinterested in solving crimes unless they can get an easy bust or trick a victim into a confession. Many are cold-blooded murderers with badges. Therefore, it is important that you never give them an excuse to harm you, never give them a reason to doubt your judgment, and ESPECIALLY never antagonize them or allow them to trick you into an unwitting coerced confession.
Remember that they can do whatever they want to you, that they will get away with it, and that many of them are drunk with that power and the stress it causes them. The smart thing to do is to sit back, shut up, and be polite.

edit: and if you had just let him write the bogus ticket, you would have had his name and badge # right there.

well, this guy has no clue that radar only reports the speed of some object in the direction that its pointing, not necessarily the car the cop sees when he looks in that direction.

also, they don't really need a reason to pull you over. your car is not your house, they don't need a warrant to pull you over and chit chat.

also, he doesn't understand that you don't get out of the car after having a few. drunk people get in fights with cops. it happens.

i nominate this for the dumbest thread of the week award

The Elizabeth Smart case is the worst example you could use. The whole case was hamstrung by her parents and the media. Current photos were not released among other things as well as a lack of TRUTH from her fvcking parents AND friends. It was a fvck up that wasn't on the police side.

I actually think brxndxn got off lucky. If I would have been the officer I would have written the ticket and then hung out in the parking lot. When brxndxn confronted me I would have told him to get back in the car and call dispatch in the morning. When he refused and became belligerent I would have pepper sprayed him and handcuffed him. I would have then taken him to the station and arrested him for disorderly conduct, public intox, refusal to obey a peace officer, resisting arrest, and harassment. I guarantee the DA would have pressed charges on every count. I then would have the DA's office lobbed by the Police Officer's Union and the FOP to NOT plea bargain. a few felonies and a few years in prison would not look good. Then again, I will admit I would have been an asshole, but brxndxn was one first. Never be an asshole to a cop. You always lose. It may not always be right or deserving of the person, but every action has a reaction. It is the simple truth when dealing with someone who has a high stress job and is used to getting attacked by the public. How many drunk and disorderlies has that officer already answered that night? How many people give him lip and try to get him fired over him DOING his JOB? People hate the police, so why can't the police do the same in kind? It isn't right but they are HUMAN just like everyone else. Sure, they are held to a higher standard, but HOW high?

He is living in world in which his only encounters with the police have been when he was wrong. He neglects the fact that they SERVE him and keep his community safe. They would also throw their life on the line to protect him or his property. People only like the police when they help them. Facts and truth are useless here Zakath.
