Stuff to see in D.C.?

So I'm heading to D.C. next week for the first time, and I'm pretty clueless on what to see. I'm going to hit all the major attractions: Arlington Nat'l Cemetary, all the monuments, Vietnam Veterans' Memorial, Korean War Memorial, WWII Memorial, the Air and Space Museum, the Holocaust Museum, etc. But I'm wondering if there's any out-of-the-way places you would recommend to see (that are within walking/Metro distance of the city center.

I'd *really* like to visit the National Cryptologic Museum in Fort George G. Meade, MD (adjacent to NSA headquarters) but there's no public transportation out there. I don't think I'm going to hit the Spy Museum since I've heard it's overrated and there's no original artifacts there (just replicas).

So, what would you recommend for a history nut who's going to DC for the first time?

Thanks!

!

Yes, save yourself the money. I got in for free and when I left, I wanted to ask for my money back. Its a lot of stuff you could learn watching the history channel from time to time. Not to mention things like the wiretaps were completely fake.

Awesome, thanks. I have everything pretty much worked out except where to eat; all the places downtown are really expensive. I'll be looking for some nice cheap food.

There's a memorial of Iwo Jima somewhere ... I forgot exactly where it is ...

Anyways, when you walk around the memorial (it's in a circle), it gives the illusion that the flag is goingup ...

When my sister comes back from away on AIM, I'll ask her about stuff to see ... she's a Senior at the George Washington University ... in fact, I'm going to DC in about a month for her graduation.

Standard D.C. tourist's itinerary

7:00 a.m. hop on the beltway (i495) go around once in each direction, after that a late afternoon stroll, it can get hot and humid so dress appropriately, bike shorts and a sleeveless rainbow T-shirt, then take a cab to Dupont circle and just wander, after a while you might feel the need for some female company and there are lots of available ladies in D.C. borrow a car (dont take your own) and head towards 14th and K street and strike up a conversation with a gal, they are relatively tame and will come right up to your car, but just like at the wildlife safari keep your doors locked and only crack the window a little bit, if you survive that it should be just about dark, head for south east D.C. and cruise around, dont worry if you get lost the locals will tell you where to go, when you flee that area, head up Wisconsin Ave. to a bar called GoodGuys and have a few beers, after all thats happened today your visit to GoodGuys will be the only thing you will want to remember

I learned something new here. I spent 20 months in the DC area and didn't know it had a China Town.

Why, Gotham City is one of the many sites to see in D.C.
(Yeah, I know it was stupid to talk about comics)
