Stuff stolen at work

DAMN DAMN DAMN! After two hours retracting my every step and looking in every nook and cranny, I think my wallet, three USB keys and my RSA token were stolen at of my backpack in my cube at work. I'm watching my credit cards tonight and giving it tomorrow for someone to turn them in, but I can't believe that all that stuff would fall out of my backpack while my nail clippers magically managed to stay in it. We just moved to a new building that management has been trying hard to convince people is not a ghetto, but this definitely won't help.

Ever had stuff stolen at work? The only other time I've run into it is when we had a receptionist that liked to take everyone's food out of the fridge.

Yes, at one of my previous jobs a dude walked into a server room and took a laptop from it. It was sitting on a table open. Poor bastard was caught in the hallway with it as he was trying to exit. How did we know? Laptop was used as a test machine, and as soon as it stopped responding, people rushed in to see what was going on. The reason the server room was not locked, is that it was a startup without a dedicated air-conditioned room in the building and whatnot. So, we just used the first available room for it.

Also, this said startup dealt with mobile devices. And we had 2 or 3 stolen from people's desks. Security was beefed up after that.

you work with teh ghetto dawg

I work for a Fortune 500 company is the sad thing. We just don't have consolidated office space, and with the space crunch my team got pushed to a building that's normally a distribution center. Sigh.

I swore up and down that someone stole my own personal LED flashlight I used in the server room.

It really pissed me off since it was the only flash light I had at work and was a fairly expensive one.

So I said screw it and ordered a replacement $30 flash light on the companies dime since I didn't want to buy another one with my own money and have the same thing happen.

Then a few weeks later I found it buried in the bottom of a laptop bag 😛 Oops!

I still can't find my screw driver though! :|

No security cameras even?

It's a professional cube type environment. I don't think there are cameras but I may be wrong. In any case, my cube is kind of blocked by a pillar and the backpack would likely have been out of the line of sight. If there are cameras may be able to tell who walked in, at least. It had to have been between 10:30 and 3.

Someone reported today that someone took one of their windshield wipers out in our parking lot.

It was snowing yesterday so the guy pulled his wipers away from the windshield and only one was there when he went to leave :Q

You need to report the credit cards stolen now, don't wait.

No charges yet and we have good fraud protection. There's only $60 in the debit account on the card I carry in my wallet, and only one credit card. If they try to use it at a retail store with cameras maybe I can catch the bastard.

Extremely poorly worded, sorry. We moved into a new building that is significantly less nice than our other ones. Management is trying to put a good face on it; "hey, it's not so bad!" Stuff getting stolen will confirm people's belief that it is really is that bad.

That's great! I'm so happy for you. But while you're letting someone run around with your active credit cards, who do you think will pay for the stuff he buys?

If he tries to use a canceled card at a retail store or an ATM, he'll still show up on the surveillance cameras. 😉

so you got all completely new employees? the "ghetto" building turned your co-workers into thieves? i fail to see how a new building caused your stuff to be stolen.

I don't think he's trying to say that the new building directly caused his stuff to be stolen. I think he's trying to say that the lack of security(?) for the building may give people the wrong idea or opportunities. It's like when someone leaves their car unlocked and an iPod sitting out in the open. Most people wouldn't steal the iPod because it's wrong, but some might because the door is unlocked, which makes things easier for them (easier to steal -no alarm/glass breaking..etc)

^ At least, I hope that's what he was trying to say. 😛

oh, wtf didn't he just say that then instead of this cryptic writing?

Some people can't explain things well? Or they expect others to know what's going on in their minds? I don't know 😛

Wow thats pretty sad that people would steal within a professional corporate environment. I thought this crap only happened in schools or out on the streets, but why people who are fully employed would resort to stealing is beyond me.

I'd report the credit cards right away though, on the other hand if you watch them and you see a charge you can go to that store yourself and try to find anyone from work you know, but if they're using the card chances are they'll be out of the building as they already did their purchase, so would probably not work.

I've never had anything stolen at work, including personal purchases that I order in, and get there while I'm on vacation and sit on my desk for a few days. Hard drives, computer cases, motherboards, ram... etc
