everyone seems to be missing bigger issues on this one as well. Cigs are some of the highest taxed products now, in my foremr state, OHIO, they raised cig taxes to make up for budget shortcomings, as have many cities/states. You cannot base your budget on a tax on a non-essential item.

If you want to go that route, tax toilet paper, everyone uses it, uses it fairly equally, and wont stop....

I wish they'd switch cigarettes over to the bottle depost method. Tack on $.05 to each cigarette sold. Set up a "redemption" center like they do with with bottles/cans and then refund the $.05 when the butts are brought back in. State makes some money, and gets the butts off the streets.

🙂

Why not build our entire tax system around non-essential items like cigs, then when all the smokers die or stop, we can.....? exactly

Nah, that's just called a federal sales tax...which I support BTW.

statistics are like a bikini, while they may be revelaing, what they hide is essential.

You only "quit" when you don't ever light up again, just like an alcoholic is always "on the wagon".

that stats on when people started smoking is pretty simple though, and most studies have come in around there
Point received and taken.

Although, you still havn't addressed why you can't just go to a non-smoking establishment. 🙂

that would be far better that relying on tax revenue from a luxury item...... especially one that kills its users.

Wow, I turn my back for a few hours and everyone goes nuts.

You know what else is a luxury item and kills its users regularly? CARS! I'm not just talking about drinking and driving either... people who just drive, and bam. they're dead. oops!

time to outlaw cars.

In Helena, Montana, a smoking ban shows reduced heart attacks for all people, not just smokers. When enforcement of the ban stopped, heart attack numbers increased to near their previous level.

Interesting to say the least. I'd love to see another study done in a different, larger area, just to see if the results hold up; the data definately warrents it.

What amuses me is banning smoking in bars.

You people who want smoking banned in bars do realize that when and if we get to the point of a complete cigarette ban, they will try it on alcohol again. Then your precious smoke free bars will be a distant memory.

Good, I'm not fond of alcohol either.

I'm sure you can find somebody that isn't fond of any given thing in the world. Some people aren't fond of television or movies. They think it corrupts the mind. Guess we should ban those as well. Video games? Produces violent tendencies. Ban it. The internet? Just a haven for pedophiles, ban it.

Slippery slope. Guess we'll all get what we want in the end. A world free of everything.

they should ban busses then to since they pollute far more than smoke from cigarettes
Good idea. Then we can all walk 25 miles to work.
That gets boring...and boredom promotes smoking.

Ban walking! Everyone must buy a Segway!

What an absurd conclusion to jump to with such incomplete information. The bias is overwhelming and the science is non-existent.

Correlation does not prove causation.

Actually, I don't know who's more absurd. The doctor who is claiming the correlation is meaningfull, or the news media for picking it up.

You don't like smoking/smokers? Fine, go somewhere the smokers aren't smoking. No one is forcing you to hang out in smokey areas, you do it to yourself.

Moreover, other major cities have banned smoking in all indoor areas. Were this correlation meaningfull, it would have showed up there, as well... and trust me, the anti-smoking zealots would have jumped on it.

As Penn and Teller say: Bullsh!t.
