The older I get the more I realize we as people just rationalize everything. You're doing it right now and so am I. We use it to make the situations we are in appear better and cement them. Case in point: I said I'd never own a minivan. I bought one and now I sing their praises.

Yeah, humans in general rationalize everything, I'll agree with that. However, what you can't argue with is that kids are 1) Stressful 2) Cost lots of money 3) Are a lot of work. I do love kids (see story about my youngest brother earlier), but man, I just don't want that responsibility for 20+ years. And even the poop, vomit, and pissing all over the place wouldn't be my biggest concern -- the teenage years would be. I remember what a mouthy pain-in-the-ass I was at 15, and even then, I was kind of shy and introverted. I can only imagine the terror of having a mouthy 15 year-old who is a party animal.

Uh, so what? My car cost me $30K but can't carry anything?

I know you were offended by the $50K comment, but $50K is not a lot of money to be making - for our age, sure it's not bad, but it's not something to be aspiring to. I don't make much more than $50K, and it's quite piddly living in places like Boston.

Factor in my pension, and I'm making much more than you are.

I think the average family income in the US is below $50K IIRC (too lazy to look it up, so I could be wrong). At any rate, it also depends on where you live. On the east coast or the Bay area, $50K isn't much. In the midwest, you can live well on $50K. If you live somewhere like Mississippi, I'd imagine $50K makes you very well off.

You don't make much more than $50k and you own a $30k car? You're an idiot who's unqualified to give life advice to anyone.

Sure thing, it just means it took a year of car payments to pay off. That's horrible. :rolleyes:

It depends on what you want out of life.
There will come a time when material things matter less.
Most times, investing in a ones own flesh and blood will pay back things that money can't buy.

sometimes not

you are slightly out of touch with that comment. $50k is a good pay unless you are a financial idiot.

hell where i live (northern IL) 50k is great. you can get a good house and live ok with it.

So here's the problem.

BMW or kids?
Madrid or kids?

Now, you guys are not talking about living the carefree life, just the occasional trip or two.

So if the issue is money, not parental responsibility, then the issue is money - get it clear.

If the issue is money, the solution is to make more money and advance yourself - not to take trips over having kids and a family.

advancing your career = time
wife = time
kids = time
travel = time

You can only split yourself so many ways. If you have a family, that means less time advancing your career and less money earned and less money earned means fewer trips. Of course there are also fewer places you can go and also fewer risks you are willing to take. Maybe you wanted to live in the mountains for a year, but you can't now because you have a family and responsibilities. Maybe you wanted to live out of the backseat of your car or move from house to house every 6 months.

Life is all about sacrifices, to believe you can have it all is incredibly naive.

After reading most these stupid and irrational, childish responses, I am very very glad many of you have chosen not to have kids.

put another way it is all about choices, we have a finite number of choices or sacrifices we can make.

There are a vast number of ways to live your life, but they all close some doors while opening others. If you start to work on a career at a 9-5 you're going to also be choosing to stop being a night owl. If you want the freedom of changing your job every year, you're going to lose some benefits of buiding up seniority at a company. If you want to race motorcycles at the track and ride you might have to give up the time you used to spend reading, woodworking, at the lake, etc.

Having kids happens to be a BIG choice because once you have them they are priorty over everything else, and you don't get to change that.

I have a dream that n00bs will one day nef in a forum where they will not be judged by the picture of their avatar, but by the content of their posts.

And the whole goddamn forum is not impressed with yours. You're the horrible bastard child of Casiotech, fleabag, and JLGatsby.
